Tablets are default work equipment and completely accepted for use during meetings, presentations, conference calls, etc. As a result of this companies face the challenge in delivering the company documents in a safe and controlled manner to the tablets.
You need the following:
a secure tablet device, secured with at least with a password.
a secure document reader for iOS. To our opinion Goodreader is the best app. It can be used to retrieve documents from several sources like WebDAV, Dropbox, FTP, and so on. It has a great synchronization feature which allows users to press on button to synchronize the documents between the Goodreader and the company document system. The documents can be stored in an encrypted document store within the Goodreader and the Goodreader can be password protected. Choose 'any WebDAV server' as connection type. MobileMe iDisk, Public iDisk, Google Docs, DropBox, SugarSync, Box.net are a cloud solutions, so useless in this context. FTP and sFTP could be a possibility but the problem is that the Goodreader does not have a synchronization feature for FTP. In addition FTP is a bad approach because documents need to be copied from the document management system to the FTP server. There is one Goodreader connection type left: "any WebDAV server". WebDAV is part of the HTTP protocol. The big advantage is that HTTP traffic can be encrypted. This will ensure encryption of the documents and user credentials send over the internet.
a secure document management system, for example IBM Lotus, Quickr or Connections, installed on premises (a Cloud solution is possible, but most of our customers still prefer an on premises solution)
a secure connection and synchronization between tablet device and document management system. We've developed WebDAV for this purpose. It allows clients to setup a Lotus Domino WebDAV server in the company DMZ. This server will connect the iPad Goodreader directly with the document management system located inside the company network. The connection between the Goodreader and the Lotus Domino WebDAV server can be enforced to HTTPS. Users will be able to choose certain document libraries and replicate the documents inside this library directly to the Goodreader for fast and offline access. When a document change is carried out on the Goodreader or in IBM Lotus (Quickr, Connections) the user will be able synchronize these changes with the press on one button with the Goodreader.
With this approach your employees can access business documents with their iPad or other mobile device safely. Try WebDAV yourself.
