To the Cloud and Beyond….
Wed, Apr 4th 2012 4:40p   Marie Scott
As some of you may know, Virginia Commonwealth University (my employer) has been undergoing a request for proposal process for a new cloud collaboration system.  After several months of vendor interviews, demos, and contract negotiations, the purchasing committee has chosen Google Apps for Education. VCU has been running Lotus Notes/Domino since 1996.  Sixteen years.  That’s a long time in the IT world.  In the course of that time I’ve been the lead architect, engineer, administrator and [read] Keywords: collaboration domino domino.doc inotes lotus notes quickr sametime traveler xpages database development email facebook google instant messaging mobile twitter

BP201: Assemble ‘n Go: Integrate Data and Directories with Tivoli Directory Integrator
Wed, Jan 25th 2012 7:30a   Marie Scott
Tom Duff and I had the privilege of speaking at Lotusphere 2012 on one of our favorite topics – Tivoli Directory Integrator.  This year we chose to do a Best Practices session rather than a Show and Tell session, so at least for me, the BP session felt like speedgeeking as we had tons of content to fit into an hour! Afterwards, we had some interesting questions and discussions about how to use TDI.  There are so many different ways you can use this product, and when you get a bunch of n [read] Keywords: lotusphere show and tell email facebook tivoli twitter

Mon, Jan 23rd 2012 11:02a   Marie Scott
Who knew that speaking for only six minutes would be so difficult to prepare for?  I certainly didn’t when I submitted my abstract for the Nerd Girl Spark session.  I’m not as experienced a speaker as many of my Lotusphere speaking colleagues by far, but I still wasn’t prepared for the angst I went through when preparing for the Spark session. I had no issue with coming up with the topic which was “Two Women, Two Countries, and how a decision can shape a generation. [read] Keywords: atlantic lotusphere facebook mobile twitter

Key Takeaways for me from Lotusphere 2012
Sat, Jan 21st 2012 8:09a   Marie Scott
I’m winding down the week of Lotusphere 2012 trying to fight off the usual post-conference plague/cold. The last few years I’ve been fortunate to add a few days to the end of the week to spend some time in Florida before heading home to the grey and cold winterscape of home. Winters in Virginia are nothing like what lots of Lotusphere attendees experience; we don’t usually have much snow. But we do have cold spells, occasional ice storms, and days of gray cloudiness. So the opp [read] Keywords: collaboration lotusphere community facebook security twitter

Emails received as HTML text – How to correct!
Thu, Nov 3rd 2011 7:10a   Marie Scott
Several users (8.5.1 and 8.5.2) have reported receiving emails as HTML formatted text.  After reviewing Notes preferences and reinstalling the Notes client, IBM Support was contacted. Here are the findings: This problem may occur after Google Chrome has been uninstalled.   If the default browser is not chosen when uninstalling Chrome, Notes will not be able to find the OS default browser. To resolve the issue, set Internet Explorer or Firefox as Window’s default browser.   In some case [read] Keywords: ibm notes notes client facebook firefox google twitter

Traveler 8.5.3 and Apple Devices
Wed, Nov 2nd 2011 8:47a   Marie Scott
We’ve been testing Traveler 8.5.3 in advance of our roll-out to our users this weekend. One thing we noticed was that on our Apple test devices, lookups for groups returned extra data.  See below: Upon investigation, I found this wiki article.  Adding the following property to the datatravelercfgNTSConfig.xml file addresses this issue and does not affect lookups for any other device (Android, etc.).  Be sure to test this out first before modifying this in your production environment! Domino 8.5.3 and iNotes Lite Mode
Wed, Nov 2nd 2011 8:04a   Marie Scott
A colleague of mine ran into this scenario after migrating to Domino 8.5.3 with iNotes.  After upgrading, users logging into iNotes would experience a browser time.  Research found that the setting in the notes.ini:  iNotes_wa_DefaultUI=dwa_lite if removed, would allow the users to login successfully.  However, the preference was to have iNotes_lite as the default.  They aren’t using the iNotes redirect to set those settings on the fly.  After contacting IBM Support, they were notified t [read] Keywords: domino ibm inotes notes facebook twitter

I know everyone is excited about the release of Notes/Domino 8.5.3.  And there is lots of information to digest regarding features and requirements.  One good bit of news I don’t want you to miss – is the entitlement for Tivoli Directory Integrator!  If you were keeping up, there were some licensing changes in 8.5.2 that limited the version of TDI and what types of data you could move with an assembly line. However, that’s all changed with 8.5.3.  Check out the licensing info regarding [read] Keywords: domino ibm notes enterprise facebook server tivoli twitter

I’ve finally hit a tipping point.  I was reading the headlines in PlanetLotus.org this morning and the content immediately set off alarms. Having been on both sides of the fence so to speak – both as a customer who wasn’t connected to the “yellowverse” per se and as someone who now has a network of peers who are business partners and leaders in the Lotus community, I can see how the average customer may be totally confused by what they read here.  There are headlines posted here prio [read] Keywords: lotus notes notes client blogging community facebook iphone network planet lotus planetlotus planetlotus.org twitter

Tom ‘Duffbert’ Duff and I put together a BOF at Lotusphere 2011 about technical writing.  I’ve recently been asked again – how does one get started with writing a technical article or book and I thought I’d share some of our bullet points from that session. Okay you’re social and you have access to all these different social networks.  And perhaps you’re wondering exactly what is the value of one network versus the other.  In my opinion the value of Linkedin is recommendations.  This is a unique feature of this network.  You have the ability to write a recommendation about a friend, colleague, co-worker, consultant, presenter, etc.  Think about it.  You know how you feel when someone writes something complementary about you. I’ve noticed a phenomenon. I call it “The Google Factor.” Domino administrators know that their users have no patience when it comes to a Lotus Notes/Domino issue. Fri, Jan 21st 2011 7:56a   Marie Scott
The Cloud. A lot of the technical discussion these days is about THE CLOUD. And I’m even presenting at Lotusphere 2011 this year about the Cloud — BP301 – Cloud Chasing 101: Planning and Preparing for your Move to Cloud Collaboration (Wednesday SW 1-2, 8:30-9:30 am). While preparing for the session, I came across some interesting research that said that early adopters of cloud e-mail and collaboration technologies include higher education institutions (universities). A Macbook Christmas Story
Tue, Dec 28th 2010 9:18a   Marie Scott
Sometimes you just have to eat your words.  On December 26, I had tweeted “Apple I am so not happy with you right now, your care plan sucketh.”  Why?  Because after installing an OS upgrade, the display on my Macbook Pro died.  And I was extremely frustrated with the lack of specific and easy to find self-help info on the Apple support web site.  I was also dismayed to find out that I did not have AppleCare for the Macbook (this is a work owned device), and I could not purchase it, sinc [read] Keywords: lotusphere apple facebook laptop mac macbook twitter

Why do universities like “free, free, free”?
Fri, Dec 10th 2010 9:34a   Marie Scott
IBM has provided through several initiatives including its IBM Academic Initiative and its recent Cloud Academy announcement.  We as a university have been able to purchase Lotus software at greatly discounted rates through campus-wide pricing.  Under this licensing plan all student and academic faculty licenses are free. So why are we asking for more?  Firstly, most universities and colleges have been hard hit by the economic downturn.  Take a look at those universities with the largest pri [read] Keywords: collaboration ibm lotus blogging email facebook google microsoft twitter

You had me at replication, but lost me at crash.
Thu, Dec 9th 2010 8:45a   Marie Scott
To say the past few weeks have been hellacious is an understatement.  We have experienced a very long streak of instability.  So while all of this is on my mind, I thought I’d comment as a customer. This week I heard some unbelievable news about some possible causes of our instability and that it may be due to the fact that certain parts of the code have not been updated to 32 bit.  And that we – not some major corporation – were somehow the first ones to find this soft spot.  But that [read] Keywords: administration collaboration domino ibm inotes lotus notes quickplace quickr sametime xpages database eclipse email facebook security server twitter

XPages is nice…but…
Tue, Nov 9th 2010 11:30a   Marie Scott
Yes, XPages is amazing technology. And if you have the time and the inclination to get started with XPages there are so many resources available to you now to learn or even to have your older Domino apps converted to XPages. Whizbang! However, I think my requirements are much more basic. I merely want a stable Domino server. I want it to run for days, and weeks, and months, without a crash. Case in point. We installed 8.5.1 FP5HF18 on Saturday on eight server partitions. And last night, three da [read] Keywords: administration domino lotus traveler xpages applications email facebook server twitter

Domino Directory Independence: Nirvana or Anchovies?
Fri, Aug 6th 2010 8:16p   Marie Scott
There has been some interesting discussion over the past couple of days about Domino Directory Independence. Domino “directory independence” would allow information now stored in the Domino person documents to be stored in another directory such as third party LDAP or Active Directory. I had quickly responded to the discussion with the recent presentations that Gabriella Davis and Tom Duff and myself had made at IAMLUG that were somewhat directory related – including a session that descr [read] Keywords: acl administration domino ibm ldd lotus policies bleedyellow bleedyellow.com desktop development facebook password tivoli twitter

Google announces User Policy Management for Google Apps
Wed, Jul 21st 2010 8:15p   Marie Scott
Google has been released a number of new features for Google Apps domain administrators including yesterday’s announcement regarding user policy management. While these features are all stepping the Google cloud in the right direction in terms of user management, what is perplexing to me as a Google administrator, is you’re never notified when those changes are going to occur in your domain.  The cpanel interface in the domains that I manage looks nothing like what Google portrays in their [read] Keywords: ibm facebook google interface microsoft twitter
