Just worked out how to get Facebook birthdays and events into my Lotus Notes calendar using an iCalendar feed ... here's how to do it: 1. Log into facebook, choose Events, then choose the drop-down and select birthdays: 2. Go back to the drop-down and choose "Export Birthdays" 3. In the "Export Birthdays" dialog, highlight and copy the link 4. Back into Lotus Notes Calendar, choose the "Add Calendar" option and paste the link from step 3 5. The Open Document Epiphany ... It’s time to add real functionality to Lotus Notes field types
Wed, May 16th 2012 4:28a   Mat Newman
Remember OLE? Remember the Lotus Notes Microsoft Office and Lotus SmartSuite document Library databases? The great thing about OLE was that while on a Windows operating system, users could edit data directly in a Lotus Notes document utilising the other programs available on their machine. One could do anything from embedding a drawing, to creating a presentation. And yes, I still have databases containing e-suite content ;-). How to create an iCalendar Feed from a Lotus Notes database
Mon, May 14th 2012 12:27a   Mat Newman
One thing coming up over and over again on Twitter recently is how much users hate Lotus Notes because it can't provide them with an iCalendar Feed that they can sync with another service like Google or OSX iCal. Interestingly, the iCalendar standard was actually co-authored by a Loti (a Lotus employee), Frank Dawson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar) Out of the box Lotus Notes accepts iCalendar feeds as a consumer (you can add feeds to your own Lotus Notes calendar using the "Add [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes database google mac server twitter wiki

In addition, I recently reached out to John C Welch (Twitter - @bynkii) who announced he was about to trial Lotus Notes again. Sun, Apr 29th 2012 7:56p   Mat Newman
This Week in Lotus episode 97 resonated soundly with me this week, especially the discussion surrounding Digital Literacy. Darren Duke made the comment: "...If you're doing a 4 year degree ... the technology you use today is going to be invariably different to the technology when you come out..." As an educator, one of the most important things I impart to my participants on any subject are the concepts they are learning about, before moving on to the process. Symbian Belle now available in Australia
Mon, Apr 23rd 2012 5:32p   Mat Newman
Wandering around the Qantas lounges last week it was obvious that Nokia's market share in Australia is declining - as it is in other parts of the world - with the most visible device being the obligatory iPhone. My own device preference remains the Nokia E7, mainly due to the excellent Telephone capabilities (it is a Phone after all), in addition to the form factor; including a large physical keyboard, and the flip-up screen, which I really like working with. That the proliferation of 'Smart' mobile devices - phones, tablets, etc - within the general consumer space has lead to a revolution in the expectations of users is undeniable. I have a client who 'lives' in Email. But they never speak of email, they talk about Notes. They receive literally thousands of messages a day. Not bad for a site with only 12 users. One of the questions about Lotus Notes I see frequently is about Voting buttons. What is the future of Lotus Notes? Will it compete with other technologies?
Mon, Aug 8th 2011 5:36a   Mat Newman
There's a healthy discussion going on over on Linkedin regarding the future of Lotus Notes. A lot of the discussion revolves around email, which is a misguided and poor perception of the platform. I enclose my comment here because I wanted to share my thoughts with a wider audience: "It's simple. If you have apps that are "Modern" (ie: Functional and NOT Ugly!), if you are on a version of Notes that is even partially current (less than 2 years old) you have a social platform, if your [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus notes email exchange exchange linkedin microsoft outlook server sharepoint sql

#LotusKnows it ain’t over ’till *I* say it’s over!
Thu, Aug 4th 2011 8:10a   Mat Newman
To say there's been a little 'hiccup' in the Yellow bubble over the last few months would be an understatement. My take is simple. An AWESOME campaign was run by IBM that - for the first time since the Notes 5 'I AM' promotions - did something to publically acknowledge the contribution of IBM/Lotus software to the greater good - with an emphasis on 'LOTUS' to the general consumer. And let's face facts. The 'general consumer' includes ALL of the customers - and users - who have a [read] Keywords: collaboration domino ibm lotus notes

Sending ugly email from Notes - two settings can change all that
Mon, Jul 18th 2011 4:10p   Mat Newman
Some email going back and forth with a contact during the last few days prompted this post. I knew they used Notes, and just could NOT help myself to educate them on some settings that would fix their 'ugly' email. It's not the first time I have come across this scenario. Users complain that its Notes' fault for a lot of things, and often respond with the misguided 'I use Lotus Notes and it doesn't ...' Yes, Notes DOES do pretty email, you just need to make sure your settings are co [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes email server

LUGs are important - they are very VERY important
Sun, Jun 26th 2011 4:13a   Mat Newman
Lotusphere is a HUGE event. As anyone who had made the trek to the mecca of all things IBM/Lotus would know, the cost of conference fees and accommodation can often be dwarfed by the investment required to get there. However, at UKLug I was a little surprised at the response when Warren Elsmore asked during the OGS how many people had actually been to Lotusphere. To a man, the respondents were almost exclusively the speakers and organisers, out of the 300 strong crowd the number of attendees [read] Keywords: ibm ilug lotus lotusphere notes community facebook linkedin network twitter

Lotus Organizer planner views in Notes - OF COURSE you can do that ... it’s Notes!
Wed, Apr 20th 2011 8:12a   Mat Newman
A pet project of mine over the last few years has been to replicate the 'Planner' view from Lotus Organizer inside Lotus Notes. Combined with this is an organisational system that I use to keep track of everything I'm involved in. The Concepts As a huge fan of David Allen and his 'getting things done' methodology, I have been working within an organisational system that enables the classification and execution of the 'things' you do. The E7 has landed. Part 1: out of the box and off to work.
Thu, Mar 24th 2011 8:09a   Mat Newman
A box arrived on my desk this morning courtesy of Nokia Australia. In the box was a brand new E7-00 business smart phone for evaluation purposes. According to Nokia, the E7 is summarised as: "A beautiful, innovative design with everything you need to stay in sync." Unboxing revealed a device with a huge black screen, wrapped in an aluminium case glowing with metal brilliance. Yes, to a geek it can certainly be called beautiful. LotusLive, user restrictions and the ’Nifty 50’, what IBM needs to do to appeal to small business
Wed, Mar 2nd 2011 8:16p   Mat Newman
IBM needs to make some changes if it is to appeal to Small Business. Last week on TwiL, I mentioned a statistic that has resonated amongst Lotus Tigers around the world, and that was: "90% of Small Business in my region employ less than 20 people." It would appear that that figure is similar in a number of markets outside of Australia. Ok, the figure may have been slightly exaggerated, it's actually only 89.1%, but you get the idea. Domino Administrators ID file certificate has expired ... No Problem
Mon, Feb 21st 2011 4:13p   Mat Newman
Came across this at a new client site today, the client knows the Domino Administrators password, but cannot use the Administration client (or any Notes client) with the Administrators ID file, because the Administrators ID file certificates have expired. It's a pretty simple thing to fix. EITHER: Use your server's Notes client to recertify the Administrator. OR Get hold of an ID file for a user who hasn't expired, Add that user to the 'LocalDomainAdmins' group, Access the Domino [read] Keywords: admin administration domino notes notes client updall password server
