Mozilla is hoping to get a Guinness World Record today for the most downloaded software in 24 hours.

The software is none other than the most recent version of the open standards Firefox browser. So if you’re still stuck with Internet Explorer, do yourself a favor and get Firefox 3 today.

What have I been up to?
Wed, Dec 24th 2008 5:50p   Pedro Quaresma
I know I haven’t written anything in a long time (about 3 months to be more precise!) so it’s time for at least an update: –> Reading - I’m rereading Steven Erikson’s “Malazan Book of the Fallen” series, for which I hope to write a review some time soon. –> Boardgaming - it’s a bit quiet on the boardgaming front, even though in the last few days we’ve picked up our pace with a few games of Carcassonne, Alhambra, Marrakesh, Saboteu [read] Keywords: blogging twitter wiki

A new chapter
Thu, Sep 25th 2008 8:51a   Pedro Quaresma
I thought of many different ways of writing this post but, in the end, I decided to just get to the point. Many of you who attended ILUG 2007 and 2008 might remember seeing me with fellow co-worker Sean Donohue. Even though we both lead teams of Notes Developers for the same company, we work in different organizations. And even though we often exchanged ideas and questions, we never really worked together before. That’s changing soon, as I have accepted a position as a Senior Application D [read] Keywords: ilug notes application linkedin profile

Give Paul Mooney a birthday present!
Mon, Sep 1st 2008 11:47a   Pedro Quaresma
Paul Mooney, one the the great guys behind ILUG, had the brilliant idea to ask for a birthday present in the form, shape and color of a charity donation. Whether you, just like me, owe Paul a lot for his efforts and dedication through the years or even if you don’t know him at all… please consider visiting his blog and donating money on his name. I’m part of the GONAD
Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 4:43p   Pedro Quaresma
It is with great joy and with a voice trembling of emotion, that I announce that I am now a member of the  GONAD - Geeky Order of Notes Admins and Developers: I’m guessing I’m probably the only user registered on the Galway/Ireland/GONAD domain! Thanks Steve for this great idea and the fantastic certificate! [read] Keywords: notes

Book review - “Noonshade” by James Barclay (The Chronicles of the Raven vol. 2)
Sat, Jul 12th 2008 5:58a   Pedro Quaresma
Noonshade is the second book on The Chronicles of the Raven trilogy. It continues the adventures of The Raven, a band of mercenaries pulled to a higher role in saving the land of Balaia. This book continues exactly where Dawnthief left off: after defeating the evil from the first book, the heroes inadvertently open a dimension rip between their dimension and one occupied by dragons. Our heroes find themselves needing to close said rip while still having to worry about the remaining armies of Wes [read] Keywords: exchange exchange wiki

Book review - “The Blade Itself” by Joe Abercrombie
Wed, Jun 11th 2008 8:22a   Pedro Quaresma
I’ve finished this one some time ago and even started a review before that got lost, so I’m coming back to it. The Blade Itself is the first book on The First Law trilogy, by Joe Abercrombie. I have read the entire trilogy already and so it might make it hard to review this book independently, but I’ll give it my best shot. This series has a fairly basic fantasy setting: there are no orcs or elves or similar, and even magic is scarcely used. There is the mention of demons and a [read] Keywords: wiki

ILUG 2008
Tue, Jun 10th 2008 3:38a   Pedro Quaresma
Last week I was at the Irish Lotus User Group! Besides the magnificent sessions, it was great to meet some great people I already knew, and some others that I didn’t. The organizers were, as usual, fantastic. I don’t know how they make it. Thanks folks! I’ll also add a few notes as they spring to mind: - Ed says IBM still won’t invest on TV advertisements for Notes. Disappointing. - Another great session by Rob, the Dojo techniques were amazing (no I didn’t drink my [read] Keywords: ibm ilug lotus notes dojo eclipse linkedin ubuntu

Boardgame review - Return of the Heroes
Fri, May 9th 2008 10:36a   Pedro Quaresma
First thing you notice when you open the Return of the Heroes box is the nice amount of good quality materials, almost worth in itself the 20 eur for the game. Colored cubes for skills, glass counters for life points, nicely drawn characters and map pieces… and a huge amount of chits. We’ll get to that later. Return of the Heroes is famous for one thing - it has the most confusing rules ever written. Fortunately there’s an online condensed/improved version that should be downlo [read] Keywords:

Dynamically loading subforms
Thu, Apr 17th 2008 1:40p   Pedro Quaresma
I’m sure many Notes developers have gone through this problem before: “I want to load a different subform after the form is loaded”. Unfortunately, Notes doesn’t let you do that, and so ways have to be found around this… layers, hide/whens, sections, programmatic tables, etc. But let’s say you reeeeaallllyyy want to dynamically load a subform, for example, when the user selects a value from a dropdown box. Here’s a way of doing it, supposing the default [read] Keywords: document formula notes

Just for fun…
Fri, Apr 11th 2008 6:09p   Pedro Quaresma
I just got reminded from Steve McDonagh’s blog of this “Album Cover” game. The rules are simple: 1. Go to the Wikipedia random article page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random . The title of the article is your band name. 2. Go to the very last quote on random quotations www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 . The last four words of the last quote are your album title. 3. My story with Lotus Notes
Tue, Apr 8th 2008 11:24a   Pedro Quaresma
Some of you might wonder why I mentioned “Collaboration” on the “About” page of this blog. A huge percentage of my worklife has been dedicated to a collaboration platform called Lotus Notes. How did that happen? Well recently there has been a meme/trend going around in the Lotus Notes community with many bloggers mentioning how they got into this same bandwagon, so I guess it’s my turn Flashback to my homecountry, Portugal, in 2000 or so, I was in college studying C [read] Keywords: admin administration collaboration ibm lotus nd6 notes R5 show and tell sntt workflow application community consulting microsoft sap

Book review - “Dawnthief” by James Barclay (The Chronicles of the Raven vol. 1)
Sat, Apr 5th 2008 11:46a   Pedro Quaresma
Right, haven’t had enough time to write on this blog so I decided to start with something non-controversial, like a book review Dawnthief, by James Barclay is the first book on the “Chronicles of the Raven” trilogy. The story revolves around a group of mercenaries, The Raven, who suddenly find themselves in a world-saving quest much different from the usual jobs for money they normally take. This might somehow be reminiscent of Glen Cook’s “The Black Company̶ [read] Keywords: wiki
