Lotus Knows How To Win Oscars
Mon, Mar 8th 2010 9:45a   Peter Presnell
A few months ago I a href=http://planetlotus.org/5d9da5blogged about one of my clients/a, Summit Entertainment.  I commented on the small, but important role that Lotus Notes had played to help one of the smaller players in the Entertainment industry achieve the all-time box office single day gross for any movie with The Twilight Saga: New Moon.  At this years Lotusphere OGS, William Shatner outlined the important role collaboration plays in the world of movies so it is perhaps surprising that [read] Keywords: collaboration lotus lotusphere notes traveler office planetlotus planetlotus.org

Thu, Feb 18th 2010 3:14a   Peter Presnell
As project Vulcan starts to roll out over the coming years (possibly in 2011) life as a Notes Developer is almost certainly going to change.  Classic Lotus Notes development using Forms, Views, Framesets, Outlines, Agents and LotusScript will continue to exist much in the same way that Notes R5 and Notes 6 can still be found in some organizations.  But a new style of development is likely emerge.  Like Vulcan itself, many of these new approaches to programming are here already.  Its just tha [read] Keywords: connections domino foundations lotus lotusphere lotusscript notes notes client quickr R5 xpages application applications bleedyellow bleedyellow.com community css db2 development eclipse java javascript oracle server websphere widgets

I suspect many of you may already know this.  But I discovered this by accident today.  I have a client (i.e customer) that has decided to deploy Notes 8.5.1 Basic.  This creates an issue for me as a developer as I must run 8.5.1 Standard in order to use my Designer client.  To test my applications using both the standard and basic clients I can use my Notes Client and my Domino Administrator client.  Because the Domino 8.5.1 Administrator client has not yet been migrated to Eclipse it ve [read] Keywords: domino notes notes client applications database eclipse

It is now exactly one week since I arrived home from my first lotusphere.  Over the past week (and the week before) I have given a lot of thought to project Vulcan and the potential it offers to redefine our approach to Notes development, especially for those applications that involve (or could involve) an aspect of knowledge management and/or collaboration.  Prior to Lotusphere I had already been doing some work on developing an idea on how a modern Notes application could quot;do collabora [read] Keywords: collaboration domino ibm lotusphere notes xpages application applications development

Could a Collaboration Community Suck At Collaboration?

The Lotus brand has always been at the forefront of collaboration.  For 20 Years Lotus Notes has lead the way as a Rapid Application Development tool for building collaborative applications.  Lotus Sametime and Lotus Connections are being recognized as the leading collaborative tools in the class.  And now at Lotusphere 2010 IBM introduced its Collaborative Agenda.  Through the vision it has outlined with Project Vulcan, IBM has announced a clear strategy to place the Lotus brand at the fore [read] Keywords: collaboration connections ibm lotus lotusphere notes sametime xpages application applications community development google ideajam openntf profile

Lotusphere Prediction #2
Mon, Nov 30th 2009 12:45a   Peter Presnell
A few weeks back I made a bold (some say stupid!) prediction that IBM might be considering announcing a Home Edition of Lotus Notes at a certain conference held in January. No inside information, just a hunch. It seems like IBM now have a huge 5 day extravaganza planned for mid-January so I can only assume they have lots of great stuff to share with the yellow faithful. So what else could IBM have planned for us?: Almost certainly we are going to see some live demos of Notes 8.5.2. This weekend Summit Entertainment's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" broke the all-time box-office record for an opening d ay in the US and also many countries around the world. In the entertainment industry communication and contacts are key. It's A Good Thing Technology Advances

Lotus Notes is 20 years old this year...  So what if computer technology had not made any of the advances it has over these past 20 years.... The first copies of Lotus Notes were distributed on 5.25" floppy disks holding 360K each.  The Notes 8.5.1 (multi-client) download was 618 MB.  So by my calculation I would have been receiving in the mail 1,716 floppy disks with the software plus a few more with all the extra goodies that always came.  Imagine getting a read/write error during the inst [read] Keywords: domino forms lotus lotusscript notes blogging database server

So Programming Language Really Does Matter

Over the years I have given a lot of thought to programming languages, especially as they relate to Lotus Notes development.  I blog about it a lot.  Yes Nathan I'm hitting them all over the head with a stick again....  I have expressed my frustration at the lack of development of the LotusScript language that is core to so many Notes applications.  I have wondered about the lack of penetration of Java into the Notes development world.  And lately I have been asking the question why SSJS an [read] Keywords: document expeditor ibm javascript lotus lotusscript notes notes client xpages application applications database development eclipse ideajam java microsoft oop planetlotus planetlotus.org server

So here we are 5 years later between Notes 8 and Notes 9.  Yes, Workplace is gone as a product but we now have [read] Keywords: designer domino ibm lotus lotusscript notes notes client xpages application development eclipse planetlotus planetlotus.org wiki

Measuring The Yellowverse (We are not alone)
Wed, Aug 5th 2009 12:48a   Peter Presnell
For a longest time now I have been kind of curious to know just how many more weird people there were like me in the yellowverse preferring to develop applications Lotus Notes rather than some of those other languages.  In my last blog I amused myself with a definition of all things yellow.  So I then decided it was time to do a little bit of research to see if there was any way to measure the size of the yellowverse and the various water coolers dispensing the yellow kool-ade.    It seems [read] Keywords: designer domino lotus lotusphere notes sametime application applications bleedyellow bleedyellow.com community idea jam ideajam openntf planet lotus planetlotus planetlotus.org

Going Green
Fri, Jul 31st 2009 2:32p   Peter Presnell
I am just about to hit the button and submit my first assignment at Xpages kindergarten.  Yes, my first Pages application is about to be release into production!  The assignment is developed using what I call "green code".  It takes an existing application developed using Classic Notes (yellow code) and combines it with Xpages (blue code) to produce a hybrid solution (green code) that combines the capabilities of Classic Notes and Xpages in a single application.  Until the features, reliabil [read] Keywords: notes xpages application

Fun Friday: Defining The Yellowverse
Fri, Jul 31st 2009 10:52a   Peter Presnell
Yeay... its Friday.  Its been a long hard week on my tiny speck of the yellowverse, so I thought I would unwind by contributing a definition for the many terms often thrown around within the Lotus Notes community. Yellowverse The yellowverse comprises those people who have cause to use the Domino Designer or Domino Administrator clients. Yellow Core The yellow core is that part of the yellowverse for whom the use of Domino Designer or Domino Administrator forms a dominant part of their day.  [read] Keywords: designer domino forms lotus lotusphere notes bleedyellow bleedyellow.com community development eclipse ideajam java office openntf oracle planet lotus

Notes Heros
Thu, Jul 30th 2009 12:49a   Peter Presnell
When you look closely within the yellowverse it is not hard to find individuals and companies that are making an absolutely HUGE contribution to our community.  There are times when these people/companies attract praise.  And sadly there are also times when we seem inclined to take the smallest of blemishes and blow them into major dramas.  Inspired by recent blogs by David Leedy, Eric Mack, jonvon and others, I would like to take time out to express my profound gratitude to two companies tha [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus notes xpages bleedyellow bleedyellow.com community development ideajam ideajam.net openntf planetlotus planetlotus.org profile taking notes

Migrating to 8.5? Test Designer first
Tue, Jul 28th 2009 3:48p   Peter Presnell
I have participated in two separate migrations to Notes 8.5.  One from 8.0 and the other from 6.0.   Before migrating, thorough testing has been requested for the core Notes client functionality (Mail, calendar etc.) and detailed testing of existing applications.  This testing consumes a LOT of time.  One aspect of testing that was not a focus for either migration was testing of Domino Designer.  I have done a lot of migrations over the years.  It seems that unless you are a Lotus Business [read] Keywords: designer domino ibm lotus lotusscript notes notes client xpages applications bleedyellow bleedyellow.com css development eclipse interface

Notes 8.5.0 and LotusScript do not play nicely II
Fri, Jul 24th 2009 1:47p   Peter Presnell
In a previous blog, I commented on the fun I have been having with Notes 8.5.0 getting my LotusScript code to reliably tell me the current view or document using NotesUIWorkSpace.  Today I can share another one of the quirks with Notes 8.5.0 that is slowing me down as a Notes developer.... It seems that somewhere between Notes 6.0.4 and Notes 8.5.0 the LotusScript debugger stopped stepping through the code contained in the Initialize module of LotusScript libraries.  When the debugger is on a [read] Keywords: agent document lotusscript notes planetlotus planetlotus.org

XPages Kindergarten - Reading List
Wed, Jul 22nd 2009 1:51a   Peter Presnell
This may be just Kindergarten but our teacher gave us a pretty lengthy required reading list to work on now and for later when we continue on to first grade..  Apparently those of us intending to focus on developing XPages for the Notes client when 8.5.1 is release have been instructed to use the same reading list until we are told to do otherwise...  Those people who have already done a lot of Web development will probably have a lot of these already.  Notes client developers have a LOT of r [read] Keywords: designer domino ibm javascript ldd lotus lotusscript notes notes client xpages ajax applications css development dojo java server widgets wiki xml xslt

Notes 8.5.0 and LotusScript do not play nicely
Tue, Jul 21st 2009 5:10p   Peter Presnell
I have been having lots of fun the past 3 weeks using Domino Design 8.5.0.  There are LOTS of issues.  There is one in particular I would like to bring to the attention of Notes Developers who use LotusScript heavily and have already or will soon migrate to 8.5.0. It seems in the world of Eclipse the NotesUIWorkspace class no longer be relied upon in the same way it  could in the past.  In particular the CurrentView and CurrentDocument properties of this class can be totally unpredictable. [read] Keywords: designer document domino lotusscript notes notes client application eclipse properties

Adding Web Service Connections
Tue, Jul 21st 2009 9:53a   Peter Presnell
Release 1.0.2 of the .Domino Framework will contain the first small steps for building an SOA. The existing Connections feature (available with 1.0) will be extended to support Web Services. For those not familiar, the concept of Connections is to define all external dependencies an application may have via a series of "Connection" documents.  This eliminates the need for hard-coding the information about external resources.  As documents these can be changed without the need for code changes [read] Keywords: connections document domino notes application database development linking planetlotus planetlotus.org server soa

DominoDatabase.GetDocumentByUUID
Mon, Jul 20th 2009 3:29p   Peter Presnell
A little over a year ago Nathan Freeman published an article about Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs). The article also refers to work being done by other Notes developers on exploring ways in which Notes applications can speed up the process for locating documents.  The technique involves using the @Password function to create a random UNID for a document based upon some external key you have for the document.  This subject came up again in a conversation I was having over the weekend wit [read] Keywords: document domino notes applications password wiki

The Best Thing About Notes 8.5 Is.....
Mon, Jul 20th 2009 1:32a   Peter Presnell
It would be fair so say over the past few weeks that I have been caught up in all the hype about XPages.  So much so that I had forgotten about the thing I was most looking forward to when doing Notes 6 development.  For me the single most important recent enhancement to Notes was not XPages or even the new LotusScript editor (in 8.5.1) but the ability to design Notes applications using a Services Oriented Architecture.  To me this one new capability ensure Notes future more than anything.  [read] Keywords: composite lei lotusscript notes xpages application applications development oop planetlotus planetlotus.org properties soa wiki

Daddy, where do Notes applications come from?
Sun, Jul 19th 2009 1:27p   Peter Presnell
I have often asked myself similar questions?  At one of my previous clients an audit was done on Notes applications and it was found that there were 70,000 Notes databases!  This led everyone to start asking - where the **** did all these applications come from?  During my 16+ years involvement with Lotus Notes I have observed the following key sources for Notes applications:- Non-IT Solutions: My biggest beef with IT departments has been that we often make it harder, rather than easier,  fo [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes application applications database development java office oracle security server sql
