Speaking at ICON UK 2014 – From Idea To App
Fri, Jul 18th 2014 11:11p   Rene Winkelmeyer
I’m honored to speak at ICON UK 2014. The event is held at the IBM Client Centre in London, which looks like a first-class location. From Idea To App “We need this data available on our mobile devices.” – an often heard requirement these days. But what needs to be done to achieve this? Learn in this session the steps to use your data, like that in IBM Domino, within a native iOS app. You’ll get a grasp on the MVC pattern in the Xcode IDE and see the benefits of t [read] Keywords: domino ibm apple mobile

Explaining Certificate Authentication – 101 style
Mon, Jul 14th 2014 12:11a   Rene Winkelmeyer
Less people know that one of my pet technologies I’ve worked with in the last years was everything around certificates. I’m not talking about SSL for websites only, more about using certificate-based technology in general. The reasons why I started with certificates was the incorporation of this piece of technology within different areas of our companies products. That has extended by time into other areas. Projects I’ve worked in and with involved for example: automatic ce [read] Keywords: domino mobile sap server wifi

WWDC 2014 Recap – Making users and developers happy – Part 3
Wed, Jul 9th 2014 12:12a   Rene Winkelmeyer
Here comes post no. 3 about WWDC 2014 (the last one in this series). So let’s see how to make users and developers happy. Generic Size Classes That’s in my opinion a huge improvement. So what does that mean “Generic Size Classes”? If you develop nowadays an app for you will use a Storyboard for the visual design. As iPhones and iPads have different variations of screen real estate one would normally have two Storyboards: one for iPhones, one for iPads. And that’ [read] Keywords: apple development enterprise interface iphone mac mobile network security

WWDC 2014 Recap – Making users and developers happy – Part 2
Mon, Jul 7th 2014 12:05a   Rene Winkelmeyer
After describing the benefits of the upcoming changes regarding iCloud in my previous post about WWDC 2014 (I know – I’m late) I’m now talking about some more technical stuff. So let’s talk about Extensions and Frameworks. Extensions This will be the most user-visible enhancement of iOS 8 (and Mavericks). You know Apple and their restrictive handling of inter-app communication? Some people think it’s a curse, that apps aren’t allowed to communicate directly [read] Keywords: apple application development mobile security widgets

Automate the upgrade of Atlassian Stash on Linux
Mon, Jun 30th 2014 12:12a   Rene Winkelmeyer
Upgrading existing software is sometimes cumbersome. Long checklists, validating pre-conditions, maintaining backups etc. So is it with Atlassian Stash. Stash is an awesome software to manage your Git repositories. As Atlassian delivers often new releases it became tedious for me to upgrade our Stash installation. I wrote a small bash script that now automates the process for me. The script does the following: Read the Stash version number and download URL from a prompt Downloads and unpacks th [read] Keywords: application java linux mysql server sql xml

WWDC 2014 Recap – Making users and developers happy – Part 1
Thu, Jun 26th 2014 12:11a   Rene Winkelmeyer
As said in my previous post WWDC showed that everything is about the users and the developers. Going through all the changes made it often hard for me to say “that’s only where developers benefit” and “that’s only where users benefit”. So I’ve started to write down some of the major changes that IMHO will affect the ecosystem mostly. But please – no “golden Apple cage” discussions on the things. Apple does everything for their ecosyste [read] Keywords: apple application development mac network security

WWDC 2014 Recap – The conference, the location, the people, the message
Mon, Jun 23rd 2014 12:05a   Rene Winkelmeyer
I’m a little late with this post as Apple’s WWDC conference happened nearly three weeks ago. But I don’t like to have things in draft mode – so here we go. The Conference I had the great opportunity to attend this years conference with my colleague Detlev. It was my second visit (first one was 2013). The week was exhausting (as the jet-lag was) and it took and will take some time for me to sort all things out. It’s IMHO outstanding for this conference that you [read] Keywords: ibm apple community facebook iphone sap
