For those who don’t know, and care…I know the numbers are getting small here…: HF: “HotFix” – which in software terms generally means a specific fix for one problem, given out to customers on an as-needed basis and generally rolled up into other more comprehensive groups of fixes. FP: “FixPack” – what it sounds like, a package of fixes (some of which may have been deemed HotFixes), that when released is supported. One of the most often asked questions about Lotus Quickr in its golden years has been “what do I have?” — meaning, on the server and in the places. This is the case with any self-service platform and has been especially pertinent with Quickr, as IBM has unintentionally made some of its migration requirements quite difficult to get your head around. A basic for-instance: the requirement that all workflows be complete before starting to migrate a place. Super, makes sense. Question of the year: what to do with Quickr
Tue, Jun 17th 2014 3:30p   Rob Novak
It’s been 16 months now since the end of marketing for IBM’s Lotus Quickr 8.5.1 (a less than desirable move, IMO, not that I’m biased). In that time, I have fielded questions from conference audiences and increasingly this year, clients and Quickr customers about what they should be planning to do. Sometimes, with Quickr applications or deployments in the thousands and tens of thousands of users. As I’ve mentioned before, support will go on for a while – most likely [read] Keywords: admin collaboration connections domino ibm lotus quickr application applications security server sharepoint websphere

This week is a week of announcements in our tech world (check the at wires 3AM EDT tomorrow, for instance…). My own announcement is that SNAPPS has become a partner with a new major vendor, Intuit, with their QuickBase online database SaaS solution. Well IBM’s Lotus Quickr 8.2 is going out of service a bit earlier than I anticipated. In fact, I was on a web conference with a client just today(!) and they showed me their custom 8.2 site and discussed their desire to export it and get the contents into SharePoint (yeah, I do that, sue me). Here’s the full announcement: http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS913-176 And the relevant details [read] Keywords: ibm lotus quickr sharepoint

So IBM released Fixpack 43 for Quickr Domino yesterday, and as I’ve not posted on the topic since Fixpack 36 more than a year ago…well just a reminder that you should be updating your servers with fixpacks as frequently as possible. With Quickr being EOM’d last year and with support set to go through April 30, 2016 (extensions available for $$$$ through April 30, 2019), you can imagine that the support organization at IBM is easier to work with when you’re on the latest v [read] Keywords: acl admin administration adminp collaboration connections domino ibm notes nsd quickr rich text css database development email firefox java javascript linux microsoft office outlook properties security server smtp widgets xml

Quickr for Domino, removed from marketing and sales in May, still has a strong user base and support from IBM and partners (myself included — we do support for our enterprise clients, especially customizations). So Fixpack 41 was just released. As you can see from the dates, it’s slowed down a bit as they used to be monthly. But, there are some critical fixes (a couple of mine, so they must be!) included. Now that the U.S. government’s back up and running, I wanted to point out a great resource for small and medium businesses – heck even large businesses that are implementing security plans. Some of you may recall from my old blog, a few years ago I posted about the head of state of a certain unnamed country using our $9.99 app SnappFiles with a Lotus Quickr server to deliver public addresses and speeches. Tutorial – Extending the IBM Connections Rich Text Editor
Mon, May 20th 2013 4:30p   Rob Novak
The editing experience in IBM Connections is pretty good. IBM has incorporated the open source CKEditor across many products – Connections, XPages applications, Quickr, and more. But a little known and not-so-incredibly documented aspect of the editor is that it’s extensible. That’s right, CKEditor accepts plugins to enhance the editing experience in many ways. Update on Quickr: Life Support
Sat, Apr 13th 2013 9:20a   Rob Novak
Last month I shared some of my views on the apparent “death” of Quickr (hint: it’s not dead). As many of you know IBM has withdrawn Quickr from marketing effective April 12. The IBM endorsed upgrade path and in fact entitlement goes to Connections Content Manager 4.5 and includes a full license of Connections 4.5. That in itself is a bargain. I had the pleasure of presenting at IBM Connect 2013 last week on this topic in the Show and Tell track. Here folks is the first of SNAPPS' ten product announcements coming fast and furious over the next two weeks! The Trash feature added in Lotus Quickr 8.5 (detailed here) is a convenient way to remove unwanted or obsolete files from places and rooms with a "safety net" to avoid unintentional deletion. But unless manually deleted by someone with the proper authority, these files, folders, lists, attachments and more will remain in the Trash forever, getting backed up to tape, slowin [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm ldd lotus quickr

Time to open the treasure chest
Fri, Aug 19th 2011 1:53p   Rob Novak
In 14 years of primarily being a consulting practice, SNAPPS "Labs" has certainly put out quite a few utilities, products, and tools for developers, admins and end users. Let's see...we had four products for QuickPlace. We built templates that have had 130,000 downloads in 4 years. Our SnappFiles app for iOS has nearly 10,000 users. We built Adobe Air utilities PandaBear and Flippr for cross-platform file integration and remote administration. Add to this a few hundred thousand downloa [read] Keywords: administration connections domino quickplace quickr xpages applications consulting integration

Happy SNAPPSiversary to...oh wait, never mind :)
Mon, Aug 8th 2011 10:33a   Rob Novak
Three years ago today, August 8, 2009, I had the pleasure of bringing on board one of our community's elite programmers, speakers and writers, Julian Robichaux. We were colleagues who became friends (and occasional roommates and road trip mates), and he quickly contributed to the team, while stretching into new territory -- Quickr development, mobile development, deep analysis of the Eclipse side of Notes, and of course represented SNAPPS to the highest standards at conferences and user [read] Keywords: notes quickr community development eclipse mobile reservation

SnappFiles native app for iOS, Quickr, CM8 and Filenet updated, now available
Mon, Jul 18th 2011 12:20p   Rob Novak
At long last, SnappFiles for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch has been upgraded for use with Quickr 8.5.1! And it's just the beginning, as SNAPPS is "opening the treasure chest" and announcing more new products this week! Quietly launched on June 24, we watched the support inbox while more than 4,000 people updated their devices for 3 weeks, and we received only four issue reports. Two were on unsupported versions of Quickr (8.5.0 is not supported!), one on a server using basic authen [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus quickr apple integration iphone ipod server

Quickr 8.5.1 Fixpack 4 is out--with one of my favorite SPR descriptions ever
Thu, Apr 28th 2011 10:00a   Rob Novak
Fixpack 4 for Quickr Domino 8.5.1 showed up this morning. While none of the SPRs were "ours" I do see quite a few that have been reported in the Quickr forums and on Twitter. Speaking of Twitter, I have sadly removed my standing search for "Quickr." It's too bad, really, as I've used the medium to help quite a few people with issues from time to time. It's amazing what you can do in 140 characters if the question is clear! Alas, a "quickr.org" site popped up in the last 3-4 mont [read] Keywords: domino notes quickplace quickr javascript microsoft office server twitter

Quickr: The wonderful thing about widgets...is widgets are wonderful things!
Tue, Apr 26th 2011 4:30p   Rob Novak
For those unfamiliar with this phrase, it's a rip-off from Winnie the Pooh, a children's book in which the character Tigger says the same thing (substituting Tiggers for widgets), only he bounces quite a bit more than I do when I say it! In my previous entry, I advocated moving up to Quickr 8.5.1 Fixpack 3, which in my opinion is the first stable release for anyone who has done customizations. Oh, yes, you still have a lot of work to do to migrate some of those customizations from a [read] Keywords: collaboration domino ibm lotus quickr application bug database dojo enterprise javascript microsoft office server websphere websphere portal widget widgets wiki xml

Quickr Domino 8.5.1 Fixpack 3: Run, Don't Walk - and - Quickr is Dead, Long Live Quickr
Wed, Apr 6th 2011 1:20p   Rob Novak
Quickr 8.5.1 Fixpack 3: Run, Don't Walk There are some quite critical fixes in Quickr 8.5.1 Fixpack 3, released this past weekend on IBM Fix Central, especially if you've ever done any customization work at all (even simple placebots). There are still some outstanding issues with the product - some of them in the way of advanced customization or smooth upgrades of previously customized places - but this fixpack is definitely one to get your servers up to. There goes one of the good ones. Hasta la vista, Viktor!
Fri, Mar 25th 2011 8:20a   Rob Novak
Viktor Krantz and I like to tease people by telling them we "met on the Internet" in 1999. It's true, really. After having spent 1986-87 as a foreign exchange student in Missouri, he came to visit his host family about every other year. And two years after I started SNAPPS, Viktor shot me an email asking if I had any interest in hiring as he planned to move to the United States, his wife-to-be was in mid-Missouri, and he knew that jobs were only to be had in KC and St. Louis. Up and Coming: USF Students at Lotusphere 2011
Thu, Mar 10th 2011 10:30a   Rob Novak
"What enticed 140 University of South Florida students to roll out of bed early enough to catch a bus leaving for Orlando at 5:30 in the morning? It wasn’t a trip to an amusement park or sporting event. It was the opportunity to be one of the first student groups ever to attend Lotusphere 2011, the annual premier conference for developers, administrators, IT and business professionals from all over the world, coming together to share their latest innovations and software solutions." You know those Collaboration Skype chats you're not in? Now there is another one. Sametime...
Fri, Mar 4th 2011 11:50a   Rob Novak
About a year ago, our good friend Stuart McIntyre (I won't even attempt a link because he has entirely too many from which to choose!) set up community chat groups for Quickr and Connections, and maybe a few others, on Skype. Last week I wondered (which turned into a Skype question in pixels) if he had done one for Sametime, and he hadn't. It was an odd concept, true, setting up a Skype chat about Sametime, but Skype is just so darn good at grouping and keeping track of chat histories ( [read] Keywords: admin collaboration connections quickr sametime community skype

The wrapup that has nothing to do with Lotusphere
Thu, Feb 10th 2011 8:30a   Rob Novak
Some of you have noted my lack of blogging, in fact I took the entire month of January off and didn't even blog during Lotusphere. Yes I was in the blogger's den, and tweeted 420 times during Lotusphere - second most with the #LS11 tag - instead of blogging. There are some great Lotusphere blog entries and "wrap-ups" out there so nobody has been starved for reading material. I have a lot to say about Lotusphere, "Lotus," Domino, Quickr, Sametime, Connections and the community [read] Keywords: connections domino lotus lotusphere quickr sametime blogger blogging community facebook twitter

Wed, Dec 29th 2010 5:00p   Rob Novak
Sparse blogging lately much due to the holidays and a very special day two weeks ago that I will blog on separately. But in fact, looking back, I see that I never mentioned that indeed SNAPPS will be sending six or seven to Lotusphere 2011 next month. Four of us are honored to speak once again, and the others will be there as attendees. Here are our sessions as planned, noting the possibility of repeats if, you know, people like them. In which I slightly embellish Julians excellent ILUG adventure tale
Thu, Dec 9th 2010 3:50p   Rob Novak
As Julian Robichaux so elegantly recounted, we had a wonderful time last month at the Irish lotus User Group meeting in Belfast. He recounted it because I couldn't remember bits. A story for another day, but suffice it to say muscle relaxants after 18 hours of travel, good. Beer, good. Both, because you forgot the former, bad. But I digress. Julian's tale of our adventures is in fact quite accurate - we did take something of a "long" route from the Giant's Causeway to Dublin, we DID [read] Keywords: domino ilug lotus blackberry google macbook reservation server

You know, calendars can be boring and embarrassing. Mines gone. This is better.
Fri, Nov 19th 2010 7:10p   Rob Novak
I just decided to ditch the blog calendar that's been sitting on the top right for all 7.5 years of this blog. Why? Lots of reasons. Blogging has slowed (here anyway - nobody can type like Ed Brill, I've seen the man in action!) due to the proliferation of other social media (follow me! follow me! connect!) making the calendar an in-my-face reminder of what appears to be laziness or staleness, when in fact I'm engaging with people in more ways than the blog could ever do. The most inspiring use case Ive ever heard for Lotus mobile
Tue, Nov 2nd 2010 4:00p   Rob Novak
I've recently been informed that the combination of Lotus Quickr, SnappFiles (free iPhone/iPad reader for Quickr content, created by SNAPPS' very own Julian Robichaux) and a shiny new iPad are being used on a regular basis by a president. Not a tiny little company president like me, not an impressive company president like Sam Palmisano (well, maybe he is, who knows!), but a real, elected president. Head of state. My jaw dropped. Wearing the badge of honor...its about time
Thu, Oct 28th 2010 8:10p   Rob Novak
OK so here's the deal. We could have done this 10 years ago. We probably should have done it five years ago. I just wasn't paying much attention to badges, labels, points, or certs. However after being convinced a year ago by Catherine Stone at Lotus that it was a good thing - no matter what your reputation or how successful you already were - to "level up" as an IBM Business Partner. So, with a few days of work I rearranged a few fields, validated a product and bumped us to Advanced. [read] Keywords: ibm lotus consulting

Having spent two weeks delivering on the promise of Collaboration University to a focused audience in London and Chicago, followed by a 72-hour stint at home and 5:30) AM flight to Boston yesterday, I now sit in the opening general session of the Lotus Leadership Alliance (LoLA). Collaboration University 2010 Sessions Posted, Early Registration Extended Out of Embarrassment over late Session Posting
Tue, Aug 17th 2010 1:40p   Rob Novak
Alright, maybe that's a little too much of my guilt complex there, as our real reason for posting the sessions so late has been the newness (Sametime 8.5.1 shipping just last week and Quickr 8.5 still in beta!) of the information. It took many code drop to determine whether widget extension was more important than proxy servers, lists trumped out LTPA tokens, and tuning tools were a part of the mix!
