That just happened. And by the way, this is what “dead” means in software.
Wed, Jun 11th 2014 1:40p Rob Novak Well IBM’s Lotus Quickr 8.2 is going out of service a bit earlier than I anticipated.
In fact, I was on a web conference with a client just today(!) and they showed me their custom 8.2 site and discussed their desire to export it and get the contents into SharePoint (yeah, I do that, sue me).
Here’s the full announcement: http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS913-176

Just wait. A Second!
Mon, Dec 9th 2013 10:50a Rob Novak Second session that is. In all the excitement of getting early notice of my first session “Running a Successful Pilot Program with Social Business Software” I somehow had it in my head that it was going to be my only session accepted this year. So I was a little surprised and happy to learn that another of my submissions has indeed been accepted.
This one will be a lot of work, but hopefully worth it for the attendees.
So look for it you Quickr fans and don’t miss it. I’l [read] Keywords: collaboration
A subtle change over there to the right
Thu, Dec 5th 2013 8:50a Rob Novak It was 7:26 AM today when the email came. I am pleased and honored to be included once again in the group called IBM Champions! Here’s what it takes to be an IBM Champion, and what the benefits are…
One benefit is that you can use the logo, so I got to tag “2014″ onto my caption over there on the right.
Per the announcement site:
These individuals are non-IBMers who evangelize IBM solutions, share their knowledge and help grow the community of professionals who are focuse [read] Keywords: collaboration
FCC Small Biz Cyber Planner 2.0
Mon, Oct 21st 2013 2:10p Rob Novak Now that the U.S. government’s back up and running, I wanted to point out a great resource for small and medium businesses – heck even large businesses that are implementing security plans. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has published a simple-to-use tool for generating your own planning guide.
A couple weeks ago I was speaking at a plastics industry conference in Miami, and the executives in the audience were quite impressed with such a public resource. Well, the first [read] Keywords: policies
Another success story on the iPad
Thu, Jun 6th 2013 10:30a Rob Novak Some of you may recall from my old blog, a few years ago I posted about the head of state of a certain unnamed country using our $9.99 app SnappFiles with a Lotus Quickr server to deliver public addresses and speeches. The setup was such that speechwriters could make changes up to the last minute on stage, and the speech could be reloaded in an instant. That was fabulous to hear, and was even moreso when I discovered (again, through the hush hush grapevine) that Steve Jobs actually responded to [read] Keywords: lotus
New Kid on the Social Block
Wed, May 22nd 2013 3:30p Rob Novak To say Jerald Mahurin is a “new kid” is a bit misleading. Heck, he’s older than me and I’m practically antediluvian. However after nearly 20 years in the industry, having been my instructor when I first learned LotusScript in 1995, then with SNAPPS for the past ten years and currently its Vice President, it’s my pleasure to welcome Jerald to the not-so-yellow-verse community of IBM Collaboration Solutions bloggers.
His first article is a tutorial-level undertaking, [read] Keywords: collaboration
SnappLinks for IBM Connections adds SlideShare support
Mon, May 13th 2013 12:30p Rob Novak Not long ago we announced SnappLinks for IBM Connections, a set of social link helper plugins for IBM Connections. This week we’re adding a new plugin to the mix, one to embed SlideShare presentations. You’ve seen them all over the web on blogs and articles, and now it’s a matter of a couple clicks to add them to your Connections Blos and Wikis.
Here’s a video introducing them where I grab my IBM Connect 2013 presentation and embed it in my Connections wiki. The video is [read] Keywords: connections
Update on Quickr: Life Support
Sat, Apr 13th 2013 9:20a Rob Novak Last month I shared some of my views on the apparent “death” of Quickr (hint: it’s not dead). As many of you know IBM has withdrawn Quickr from marketing effective April 12. The IBM endorsed upgrade path and in fact entitlement goes to Connections Content Manager 4.5 and includes a full license of Connections 4.5. That in itself is a bargain. However there are many situations where due to custom functionality, a growing user base, infrastructure, training, or some other reason [read] Keywords: connections
IamLUG: Still a few slots left!
Thu, Apr 11th 2013 9:50a Rob Novak IamLUG, the largest user group meeting in the US for IBM collaboration professionals and users, is happening May 6-7 in St Louis. I’ll be there speaking as will Jerald Mahurin from my team. My session “So a gadget and a widget walk into a bar…” is almost done, but I’m still working on the punch line. Of course this is about OpenSocial and iWidgets in IBM Connections. Jerald will be taking the stage on IBM Connections user interface design – themes and more.

Meow. That was easy.
Wed, Jul 25th 2012 5:13p Rob Novak Just to report that I didn't experience
Alan Hamilton's issue with Lotus
Notes mail (in my case, the latest drop of Notes 8.5.4 Social Edition)
crashing on today's smooth upgrade to OSX 10.8 "Mountain Lion"
-- however as noted in his posting, Apple has their own application called
"Notes" that takes over a bit and there is a little work to do.
During the upgrade, Apple drops a "Notes.app"
file into the Applications folder on your Mac. Since it's the same applicati [read] Keywords: ibm

Yes, it was fun. And no, I couldn't see you.
Fri, Jan 27th 2012 4:20p Rob Novak I had the privilege of being called on
stage at Lotusphere 2012's opening general session by Alistair Rennie to
represent the IBM Champions for Collaboration Solutions. He gave me 5 minutes
notice and apparently didn't tell OGS staffers (except a few required to
get the photo right) during rehearsals for fear it might get back to me...
So at the opening, Alistair asked me
"Demo or No Demo?" to which I immediately said, "As big
a fan as I am of panels..." then crowd-sourced the a [read] Keywords: collaboration
Lotusphere 2012 sessions
Tue, Dec 13th 2011 2:50p Rob Novak I'm pleased to be attending my 17th Lotusphere
in just a month (gulp) and speaking for the 11th straight time. It's a
little different this time around, with a new topic and speaking with a
new co-presenter, but it should be a great time again. Last year I eclipsed
my 50th session overall (pun intended), guess I've been slowing down in
my old age!

product announcements coming fast and furious over the next two weeks!
The Trash feature added in Lotus Quickr
8.5 (detailed here)
is a convenient way to remove unwanted or obsolete files from places and
rooms with a "safety net" to avoid unintentional deletion. But
unless manually deleted by someone with the proper authority, these files,

Happy SNAPPSiversary to...oh wait, never mind :)
Mon, Aug 8th 2011 10:33a Rob Novak Three years ago today, August 8, 2009,
I had the pleasure of bringing on board one of our community's elite programmers,
speakers and writers,
Julian Robichaux. We were colleagues
who became friends (and occasional roommates and road trip mates), and
he quickly contributed to the team, while stretching into new territory
-- Quickr development, mobile development, deep analysis of the Eclipse
side of Notes, and of course represented SNAPPS to the highest standards

Up and Coming: USF Students at Lotusphere 2011
Thu, Mar 10th 2011 10:30a Rob Novak "What
enticed 140 University of South Florida students to roll out of bed early
enough to catch a bus leaving for Orlando at 5:30 in the morning? It wasn’t
a trip to an amusement park or sporting event. It was the opportunity to
be one of the first student groups ever to attend Lotusphere 2011, the
annual premier conference for developers, administrators, IT and business
professionals from all over the world, coming together to share their latest
innovations and software solutions."

The most inspiring use case Ive ever heard for Lotus mobile
Tue, Nov 2nd 2010 4:00p Rob Novak I've recently been informed that the combination
of Lotus Quickr, SnappFiles
(free iPhone/iPad reader for Quickr content, created by SNAPPS' very own
Robichaux) and a shiny new iPad
are being used on a regular basis by a president. Not a tiny little
company president like me, not an impressive company president like Sam
Palmisano (well, maybe he is, who knows!), but a real, elected president.
Head of state.
My jaw dropped.

Wearing the badge of honor...its about time
Thu, Oct 28th 2010 8:10p Rob Novak OK so here's the deal. We could have done
this 10 years ago. We probably should have done it five years ago. I just
wasn't paying much attention to badges, labels, points, or certs. However
after being convinced a year ago by Catherine Stone at Lotus that it was
a good thing - no matter what your reputation or how successful you already
were - to "level up" as an IBM Business Partner. So, with a few
days of work I rearranged a few fields, validated a product and bumped
us to Advanced. [read] Keywords: ibm

Robichaux and I have the pleasure
of going once again to the
Irish Lotus User Group meeting
in Belfast, Northern Ireland in just a few weeks. If you said it took me
too long to decide on a session topic, then ten of my friends and organizers
would simply nod in agreement...

there's the hook up front but still, this should be a fun and interesting
session to deliver after three packed days of technical brilliance. Have

On Tuesday, July 27, IBM announced that
IBM Lotus Sametime 8.5.1 would be generally available (GA) for customers
and IBM Business Partners to install today, Thursday, July 29. Unfortunately,
we identified an issue during the build process and have opted to delay
