What a way to spend a day - getting new glasses

Today I got to spent the better part of five hours at LensCrafters. I got up, started to work and my glasses decided that today was the day that the right side was going to detach from the nose bridge. Being that the frames and lenses are both made of plastic and super glue has a nasty habit of melting plastic, there was no way to fix them. So it was off to LensCrafters in the mall at 9:30.

I got there at 10:00, just in time for them to open the gate and was able to get an appointment for 10:45 with the doctor. It has been almost 5 years since my last eye checkup so I figured now was as good a time as any to get everything checked. I am not getting any younger and who knows what nature has in store for my eyes these days.

I finally got called into the initial testing room around 11:00. Went through their battery of tests on all sorts of interesting machines. I still say whomever invented that one that blows a puff of air into your eye is a sadist. I really hate that one. Okay, tests are done, go back out and wait for the doctor.

11:30, doctor calls me in and we proceed to go through the usual. "Look through the funny lenses and tell me which one looks better." Back and forth, over and over again until we both agree everything is as good as it is going to get. She writes up the paperwork, prescription and I am sent out to meet with the person who is going to help me find the right pair of frames (Karen - she didn't have to work today - and I did that while I was waiting so we already had 3 different pairs to choose from).

Oh yeah, the results from all the tests came back fine, no problems, just a slight astigmatism. Nothing to worry about. Cool.

We now get to go through all the paperwork and decide which coating I wanted today - I needed them done in an hour so I could get back home and get back to work. With the one hour time restriction, I could get either the transition or the anti-glare. Since I cannot see in the sunlight and I don't want to have to put my sunglasses on just to go out to get the mail, I opted for the transition. When I decide I want the anti-glare, I can come back in and they will order a new set of lenses with both. I can keep my current glasses and when the new lenses come in, I can come back and they will replace them. Okay, it is a hassle but what can I do at this point?

12:30, all paperwork is done and the order for the lenses is placed with the techs in the back room behind that big window. What to do for an hour since I cannot see well enough to wander around the mall or do any shopping? Might as well eat, that will kill an hour. Panera Bread is right across the mall so off we go.

1:30, back to the store to get my new glasses fitted. Try them on and, I don't know about you but, seeing everything in double does not make a really good impression on me. Okay, take them into the back room and look at them closely in the microscope. Oops, somehow when they cut the new lenses, they made a mistake and cut a prism into them. No wonder I was seeing double.

I get the "We are so sorry about this and we will fix this right away but we have to make a complete new pair so it will be another hour" speech.

Okay, now I am not pleased but what can I do. It does not make sense to go home and come back or to walk around either (see previous paragraph). I send Karen out to go do some shopping on her own and I find a chair right in the middle of the store and take a nap. Best idea I had all day.

2:30, lenses are done (I hope) and I am back at the fitting counter. Put them on and adjust them until they are sitting properly on my nose and I can see properly again.

Finally back home at 3:00. What a way to waste a day but at least I can see the computer and read the screen again.

Lesson for the week: Always ask for a second opinion.

Lesson for the week: Always ask for a second opinion. This statement really hit home this week and it saved me a huge amount of money. On Monday morning, the engine in my wife's car died while she was on her way to work. No warning, no lights, no bells and whistles, just sitting at a light and bang, stutter and then nothing. Dead. Flash forward, I arrive to help her move it out of traffic and wait with her until AAA arrives to tow it to a repair shop a few miles away while I drive [read] Keywords:

IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.3 How-to While this is a very short (less than 60 pages) book, it tries to pack a lot of information into it. The chapters are set up as Simple, Intermediate and Advanced. All of a sudden I am living on lakefront property
Thu, Apr 18th 2013 10:16a   Roy Rumaner
The first two picture are from yesterday about 4 hours after the rain started. Not to bad out back and the usual small ponds around the storm drains in front. Today, after almost 12 hours of very intense thunderstorms, we now have a lake instead of small ponds and the backyard is completely under water. After about two hours with light rain this morning, the storm sewer in the backyard did it's job and the backyard is quickly draining out. (Ignore my finger, I am still try [read] Keywords: blogger gadget

Thank you to Chris Toohey for setting up a week of Google+ Hangouts for those that didn't get to go to IBMConnect (also known as Lotusphere 2013).
