Deep Dive into Social Business Toolkit with XPages: The Box Integration (1)
Mon, Sep 15th 2014 7:12a   Serdar Basegmez
I have been working on IBM Social Business Toolkit SDK for a long time. Last year we have introduced a couple of cool demos on IBM Connect with my friend Graham Acres. One example was the XPages integration with Basecamp. It has been on my to-do list for months to blog more details on this topic. Finally, here I am... This is going to be a series of blog post. What I'm planning is to blog about a basic example that integrates XPages applications with one or more cloud-based services for [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm xpages application applications database development integration interface java javascript openntf password properties security server twitter widget widgets xml

XPages Tip: Realizing the Cost of a Value Binding...
Mon, Sep 8th 2014 2:06a   Serdar Basegmez
A little tip on XPages development... We are binding values everywhere on our pages. Are you optimizing the way you use them? Basic value binding is straight forward. If you use a data source, scope variable or any other property/map/list object from your bean, etc, you are good. However if you 'compute' something to get a value, that computation has a processor and a memory cost. Let's see an example here. Consider the following code, where we want to get some input via a combobo [read] Keywords: dblookup domino xpages application development java javascript openntf

Mini Patterns for XPages: Using Beans for Parent - Child Documents
Mon, Sep 1st 2014 6:11a   Serdar Basegmez
After a looong time, I'm blogging XPages again :) Last time, I was blogging about mini patterns (this and that). These are partly reusable design patterns for common cases. Today I'd like to introduce a simple pattern which I have been using in a couple of applications. This is also an example how you get benefits from Managed Beans for specific purposes. Let's start. Wed, Jun 25th 2014 7:11a   Serdar Basegmez
After a very long period of silence, here I am with a tiny little trick about File Download Control in XPages. I saw that there are lots of questions about this component, related to showing attachments instead of downloading them. Stephen Wissel explained how to build a download url with the XPages syntax. The old style notation (which DOES NOT work in XPiNC): http(s)://[yourserver]/[application.nsf]/[viewname|0]/[UNID| ViewKey]/$File/[Attachm [read] Keywords: domino ibm ldd lotus notes xpages application database development javascript server

A Quick Question for Administrators...
Tue, Jun 10th 2014 6:14a   Serdar Basegmez
Just a quick question. Especially large domains have lots of users with the same full name. In modern directory systems, we can decrease the possibility of conflict by using hierarchical naming, however that will become an issue eventually, when you need to specify an e-mail address. I have seen that adding a number to the first or last name (John Smith , John 1 Smith, etc.) is highly popular. How do you handle people with the same name in your environment (e.g. Domino, AD, Connections, et [read] Keywords: connections domino lotus

As many friends around, we are shocked and deeply saddened by unexpected loss of our own Tim Tripcony. Tim Tripcony was one of the most talented developers I have met... Last time, I have blogged about the importance of the importantance of canceling tasklets... In most of the time, canceling a task is a 'choice' you have. You might want to stop the task for a reason. However, a very important problem is falling into deadlocks. Asking questions and getting answers about XPages?
Tue, Jan 24th 2012 1:14p   Serdar Basegmez
Today, this issue came up by a simple question: Do we need a Skype Chat for beginner level XPages developers? If you are using Skype persistent chats, you would know their problems: 1. They are distracting. 2. They don't have search and memory. 3. They are not public. So the discussion has moved over twitter... First of all, my personal thoughts: There is a great wall around XPages preventing newcomers. I am not talking about documentation or learning stuff. Mini-Patterns for XPages: Using Dynamic Content Control (2)
Mon, Dec 12th 2011 3:32a   Serdar Basegmez
Dynamic Content is a great control coming with the extension library. I noticed this too late (thanks to Bruce Elgort and Thomas Adrian)... Before we start, I'd like to remind one of the biggest discussions about Web 2.0 pattern (I'm excluding people saying it doesn't exist)... As you know, web 2.0 pattern heavily uses AJAX which gives us many different options to render a page. As Turkish LUG, we will also be trying to organize a workshop this month. Many companies will have discounts next month. Bloggers (including myse [read] Keywords: xpages development

Bookmarks opening in new window always...
Thu, May 26th 2011 12:08p   Serdar Basegmez
One thing that makes me really annoyed about Eclipse based Notes client is the CTRL-TAB key issue. Design team has lifted this key combination as Lotus Notes moved into Eclipse in the R8. At UKLUG, Mary Beth Raven cleared the issue at last (or I hear that for the first time). The design team canceled this key combination due to the accessibility principles. Because according to this principles, Ctrl-tab is an advised combination for rich text fields. Naturally, one thinks about why all b [read] Keywords: ibm lotus notes notes client R8 rich text sametime applications database eclipse

New features of XPages in 8.5.3
Sun, May 22nd 2011 7:54a   Serdar Basegmez
In DNUG, I had chance to chat about XPages... Version 8.5.3 is coming with great features. Some key points are like that: I talked with Martin Donnelly. He is a great guy and fantastic presenter. He told us that probably, 8.5.3 will not contain a new extension library. However IBM is planning to release a stable version independent from the release stream, using update sites. XPiNC features will be extended in 8.5.3. XUL will be upgraded to the equivalent of Firefox 3.6.x. After my first DNUG conference...
Sat, May 21st 2011 12:36p   Serdar Basegmez
So DNUG is over. Including preconference, DNUG was a three-day conference. As I said before, most of the sessions were in German. so my participation doesn't count to be educatory :) In my long travel, my point was to see other Lotus communities and user group conferences. DNUG is a great organization. They have been gathering for 17 years and twice a year. While we couldn't find 100 persons together in a free conference in LUGTR2011, getting hundreds of people from different cities of [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus notes sametime traveler xpages application blogger community google iphone mobile planetlotus skype

Day Zero in DNUG, Day One in Germany...
Wed, May 18th 2011 3:30p   Serdar Basegmez
My twitter (version 3.4.2) followers noticed that I am in Germany for DNUG Conference. After organizing LUGTR conference, (even I am late) I decided to see other user group conferences. I picked two very distinct types of events: UKLUG and DNUG. So far, DNUG is not like a user group conference. Looking at the agenda, it seems like European Lotussphere! Well-organized event has a very deep content... I were a bit late for the Day-0 activities and only catched live streaming of Social Bus [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus sametime twitter

Authenticating Notes users for Web apps automatically...
Wed, May 11th 2011 10:27a   Serdar Basegmez
In one of my previous posts, I mentioned about a way to authenticate user for a web application inside an iFrame in XPiNC page. Now I found another solution for this. When a user clicks a link inside a Notes Client application, we may authenticate him on the web server application (either XPages or 'legacy' (!) web application)... This is very important. Because for over 5 years I were searching for such a solution. Normally, if you are using hybrid application scheme (that is your [read] Keywords: agent domino ibm lotus lotusscript notes notes client script library xpages application applications bug database development firefox java javascript password server xml

Dear IBM, It’s time to integrate Skype and Sametime...
Wed, May 11th 2011 4:52a   Serdar Basegmez
I personally think that Microsoft has overpaid Skype and it won't return that much profit in tangible or intangible quantities. However, I think it's time to connect Skype to Sametime Gateway product. Considering lots of SMBs are using Skype, it will be a benefit. IBM has a strategy to make its products compatible with different competitors' technology. On the other hand, I hear what IBM will say. There are technical problems and uncertainity about the future of Skype. But I just needed [read] Keywords: ibm sametime integration microsoft skype

XPages Tip: A modal waiting dialog for background processes.
Tue, May 10th 2011 5:44a   Serdar Basegmez
When there is a background processing where the user should wait until it's done, I don't want him/her to click anywhere else in the screen. But I also want the user to know s/he'll have to wait. Overdemanding? I found a very simple solution to this problem. Sure there is more elegant solutions without dojo, but let me share it... This is the main screen: When user clicks the pointed button, there is a background process which would take 20-25 seconds. It is a long time fo [read] Keywords: agent xpages application css development dojo javascript widget

So, superior features sell the product?
Mon, May 9th 2011 10:56p   Serdar Basegmez
Do superior features sell your product? Yes? So compare these two products: - Which one is more robust/stable/reliable? - Which has more 'social' capabilities? - Which has more connectvity? - Which provides more features (discussion, commenting, threading...)? - Which is more successful?
