A Lotusbeer collaborative idea for 2009

Calling all LotusBeer'ers in the UK and Ireland.

I have a cunning plan for the relief of the post Lotusfear anticlimax - particularly for folks like me that can't go!

In the spring of the year what about a Tri-Nation Lotusbeer event. We have English, Scottish and Irish LotusBeers. (Is there a Welsh branch?) so it is only right and proper that we collaborate in some good natured national frolics.

I was thinking something along the lines of a team from each location plus supporters engage in some pub based sporting endeavour, some examples that jump to mind would be...

Darts
Snooker
Pool
Yard of Ale
Dominoes (the slam on the table and swear a lot variety not installing servers)
Pie / Pickled egg eating

Needless to say a suitable venue would need to be found suitable for all the attendees.

I am willing to run with this on an organizational level cos it sounds like fun.

Ping me a comment with your thougths

Oh Joy .. here comes July :-( or "The Joy Of Flags"
Mon, Jun 22nd 2009 6:56p   Steve McDonagh
I am sat here in my front room watching some chaps who don't live on the estate hang flags on the lamp posts. This is because it is only a couple of weeks until that annual orgy of all things "orange" and "protestant" gets under way. This year there are a lot less flags, mainly due to the fact that when the wee toerags whose appear to communicate in monosyllabic grunts, groin scratching and positioning of a Burberry/Rangers FC baseball cap at varying angles upon their echoingly empty heads, cam [read] Keywords: blogger

I recently had a run in with some anti-Darwin YEC (Young Earth Creationists) I am a card carrying "Grumpy Old Atheist Fart" and as I get older my capacity to put up with the tawdry dribbling of the wilful ignorant gets less and less. Panda Bear - a Boon for Quickr Users from SNAPPS
Fri, Jun 12th 2009 4:57p   Steve McDonagh
There are dozens of links to this already, however just in case you don't follow the Notes Yellow Blogs.. This is just out from those awfully nice people at SNAPPS Panda Bear which is a nice alternative to the "Quickr Connectors" supplied with Quickr and because it is an ADOBE Air App, much less intrusive when installed on your PC. I was lucky enough to have been using it for a while now, the folks at SNAPPS called it "testing" .. but I managed not to break it, which for me is strange and for P [read] Keywords: notes quickr blogger

Notes Client Tip - Dragging and Dropping documents into a calendar
Fri, Jun 12th 2009 4:28p   Steve McDonagh
I was asked today the following question, Why can't we drag a customer from a customer list onto our Customer Visit Calendar and make an appointment with them that way? Good question. We already have that functionality on the web interface. Popup a customer list, select the customer or customers from the list and drag them to the day you want to schedule the visit and it auto creates the document for that customer on the day you dragged the document(s) onto. An Alternate way of embedding a configurable Video player in an NSF
Wed, Jun 3rd 2009 7:50p   Steve McDonagh
I recently came across a nice open source video player that is dead easy to build into your Notes Applications. The player is called FLOWPLAYER and has been released under a GPL license. There are commercial and multi-domain versions which you have to pay for, but the base app is free to build into your apps. You can download it here and once you have the zip file unzipped you have two SWFs and an example directory. I embedded it in my app like this. 01. His wife was beaten, a neighbour a woman several months pregnant who tried to stop the beating was attacked and another man was beaten so badly around the head that he remains in a critical condition in hospital. Irish Government, The Catholic Church and abuse

There are paragraphs and links in this post that are not easy to read ... In Ireland for decades children were systematically abused, physically , sexually and psychologically by agents of the Catholic Church in Ireland. When they did report the abuse the children were ignored, when the complaints got to great to ignore the church simply moved the nuns, priests and brothers to other parts of the world out of the jurisdiction of the state ... not that they would have done a whole hell of a lot a [read] Keywords: forms archive blogger

Sat, May 23rd 2009 8:54a   Steve McDonagh
Yesterday I was sitting on the bench in our back garden doing what I do best ... very little with a tin of beer. It occurred to me that there is a mindset that values software almost purely on the "OOOO AHHHH" factor it generates. It has long been a bone of contention (for me anyway) that Ireland still has a Blasphemy law. Currently, section 13 of the 1961 Defamation Act provides for sanctions, both monetary and prison, where a person might be convicted of publishing a blasphemous libel and this HAS to be enacted since article 40.6.1.i of the Constitution of Ireland imposes an obligation to implement the constitutional offence of blasphemy. I was having a discussion the other day with a chum and we were in full "grumpy old fart" mode over the lack of lyrics like there was in the olde days. However in retrospect having listening to a broad spectrum of music on the iPlod since then there is a surprising amount of inventive lyrics hidden behind the flash band synth and driving beats of modern dance music. OK this came up today in a skype chat about browser side sorting of array's returned by AJAX, prior to display on the page. particularly useful if you want the user to have the ability to sort the date in a variety of ways without going back to the server to get it done. The great thing is there is a built in JS method on the ARRAY object that allows you to sort the contents in all sorts of interesting ways. It is relatively simple to do but there are a few GOTCHAs to remember the main one of t [read] Keywords: javascript ajax blogger server skype

All the dead voices
Sun, Apr 5th 2009 7:49p   Steve McDonagh
Just finished watching a BBC drama called "Five minutes of heaven" on BBC2 and although it had dark, sombre overtones it has left me more positive about this troubled little country I live in. The drama revolves around two men whose lives intersected briefly in the late 70's when the one of the men murders the other's brother in a sectarian tit-for-tat murder. Now I realise that many of my readers come from outside Northern Ireland and you probably don't know more than what the media has served [read] Keywords: blogger

I got a new toy this weekend and this is the first output
Sun, Mar 29th 2009 12:57p   Steve McDonagh
I got a new toy this weekend. It was meant to be for my Birthday which is next week but Amazon were a bit too good at delivering to Ballygobackwards ;-). The Gadget in question is a new Wacom Bamboo MTE450KEN Pen Tablet and of course it had to be de-boxed and tested ... just in case it was faulty and had to go back. I am relatively new to using pen/tablets as user input devices. Sun, Mar 29th 2009 10:57a   Steve McDonagh
It has come to my attention that several people when they heard UKLUG is happening in Edinburgh may have downloaded the Microsoft Vista Haggis Fix and Language pack to immerse themselves in the "Scottish Geek Experience" prior to journeying to the Scottish capital in October. Conditional reasoning - When if - then's get muddled
Sun, Mar 29th 2009 10:00a   Steve McDonagh
I was having a conversation the other day on conditional reasoning and how bad we IT people can be at using logic in our programming. I was reminded of an example that was put to me when I was at University. This is relatively famous in Maths geeks circles and was put forward by Wason and Johnson-Laird in 1972 to show how poor we really are at reasoning. Right it is Saturday, there is no rugby worth the watching so what better way to spend the time - lets talk about MXML. MXML is what you right FLEX apps in. (At this point i should mention that an AIR app is just a FLEX app that runs outside the browser using a runtime .. ok?) it is just ordinary common or garden XML that describes the application, once you have written the MXML you compile it and you have your FLEX application. 3 Cheers for the Northern Ireland MLA's

That is not something you will hear me say very often! For my foreign readers and MLA is a "Member of the Legislative Assembly". Sort of like an MP in Westminister except their mandate is provided by the voters of Northern Ireland which after 50 odd years of being "run" 100% by the Westminister Parliment having voted for these folk it is nice to see they actually "do" something. Drag and Drop Part II

Further to my post of Friday on drag and drop here is some other thoughts I had when commenting the code than perhaps were not obvious from the previous post. YUI comes complete with a PROXY object which allows you to drag a proxy version of the thing you click on rather than the thing itself. I deliberately didn't use this method because I wanted to maintain the list on the left AFTER the drop had taken place because users may want to drag a customer to more than one date on the calendar and d [read] Keywords: css openntf server

World trade talks collapse - are we surprised? are we F**K
Tue, Jul 29th 2008 6:29p   Steve McDonagh
Any chance of the world agreeing what a "fair" global market actually is evaporated as the trade talks in Geneva end in disarray. WTO head, Pascal Lamy confirmed the collapse, which officials have blamed on China, India and the US failing to agree on import rules. The main stumbling block was the fine print which would allow developing countries to protect poor farmers by imposing a tariff on certain goods in the event of a drop in prices or a surge in cheap imports. Learning how to fish from the masters.
Sun, Jul 27th 2008 10:48a   Steve McDonagh
There is a old Irish proverb that goes "Listen to the sound of the river and you will catch a fish" Which is what I did yesterday evening but as luck would have it I did very little catching and a lot of looking and listening. The main reason being their was a pod of harbour porpoise teaching some of their youngsters how to herd fish between the piers at the river mouth and then ambush them at speed. Nature has formed these creatures into warm blooded torpedoes capable of amazing turns of speed. [read] Keywords: blogger

Doctors have concluded that if you find the man in the coffee beans in 3 seconds, the right half of your brain is better developed than most people. It now transpires that the stabbing in the queue waiting for Grand Theft Auto was in fact not related at all to the controversial game and happened 1/4 mile up the road. But as the stabee lies in hospital he can be reassured that The victim had categorically not pre-ordered the game – and GameStation is confident that he was not a GameStation customer; neither was he a part of the queue outside the Croydon store,” a source told the Games Radar blog. The source also said that "...the stabbin [read] Keywords:

Giving ASW a bit of a stroke.
Fri, Mar 28th 2008 10:01p   Steve McDonagh
Was that title ASW enuff I wonder? Being a relatively neophytic blogger I have only just found out what an ASW is. Although, it seems, there is some debate about the "W". The underlying throb of self-gratification that the ASWer feels does push me to the "anker" rather than "hore" side of the debate. Added to this the unlikeliness of the existence of a sufferer of Portnoy's Complaint being given the suffix of "..with a heart of gold" convinces me all the moreof the veracity of the "beating the [read] Keywords: blogger

The never ending Web page like Gmail's on domino, is it feasible?
Thu, Mar 27th 2008 7:47p   Steve McDonagh
Today I have been thinking about SJAX (I think it should be more corretly PSJAX Pseudo Synchonous JAX) and methods that would allow me to keep the connection open to a client from the server. I was asked about the feasibility of creating a real time trading room where Ebay Type bidding takes place, but in real time. Bidding rooms last no longer than an hour multiple supplier attendee's each able to see the requirements but not their competitors bids. Where like betting in poker the "current bid [read] Keywords: admin , agent , domino , ajax , css , java , server

Particles just gave me the shock of the week - Sharepoint has become the new Lotus Notes
Thu, Mar 27th 2008 10:00a   Steve McDonagh
When particiles popped up this SharePoint Has Become the New Lotus Notes According to New CMS Watch Research it did come as a bit of a surprise I am not sure i agree totally with the article esp when it says ...Like Notes in a previous decade, IT often embraces SharePoint as a simple answer to myriad business information problems. But the platform can easily morph into a technical and operational morass, as repositories proliferate, and IT comes to recognize that various custom applications re [read] Keywords: administration , lotus , notes , applications , sharepoint

The "My Album Cover" meme
Thu, Mar 27th 2008 6:26a   Steve McDonagh
I have been following the "My Album Cover" meme that was doing the rounds a few months ago, and it occurred to me that there must be some truly weird but REAL album covers out there and yes true enuff there are .. here are just a couple I have found. The rather cheerily titled Freddie Gage Opus, the first in the "It is perfectly OK to wear white socks and shoes" 6 record Box Set. And the unforgettable classic now digitally remastered and reissued as "want a sweetie little boy?" [read] Keywords: blogger

I did a GoogleFight over the two protagonists currently squaring up in the Blogsphere.. I know .. I know.. it doesn't really help one way or t'other and is all fairly meaningless. Converting Web Posted Data into a Notes List collection in an agent
Mon, Mar 24th 2008 8:41a   Steve McDonagh
When you use a POST (or for that matter GET) transaction directly to an agent from an AJAX connection call you generally have to do something with the data. I find that converting the arguement name value pairs into a Notes List makes life so much easier. Being able to see your own arse - a boon for society
Sat, Mar 22nd 2008 9:51a   Steve McDonagh
Continuing the slightly "out of kilterness" of today. A link to this appeared in my in-box from a friend in Sweden. Now this is indeed a boon to society, particularly the ladies who when faced with the problem of finding out for themselves if their arses look big in what ever garment they are trying on and will usually attempt the black belt graded Tai-Chi "clematatis- winds-itself-around-the-donkey's-buttocks" manoeuver to find out if said posterior is indeed made to look larger. Gentle reader, I wanted to ease you into your Easter Saturday gently without fuss or kerfuffle. However news of great import has just broken. The Great Illinois Corn Flake has been sold! Yes the cornflake which was withdrawn, added again and withdrawn from auction site eBay over disagreement over "no food" policy has been sold for the princely sum of $1,350 to the owner of TriviaMania.Com. Thus were they stained with their own works and went whoring with their own inventions This post is dedicated to my son and all other young men about to fly the nest and make their way in the world. Thinking about Views, particularly large ones
Thu, Mar 20th 2008 9:36p   Steve McDonagh
A few weeks ago i blogged about very large datasets in views, that post came from a desire to maximize performance without usability in a web client. Nathan Freeman amongst others pointed out that very large views should really have a filtering system in both the notes client and on the web. Thinking about this yes the notes client does make you lazy, categorized views work are easy to get around in, users are used to them and we as developers sometimes fall prone to following the path of least [read] Keywords: composite , document , notes , notes client , application , email , openntf

A wee story
Sun, Mar 16th 2008 9:25a   Steve McDonagh
I was thinking about the forthcoming serial story suggested by Ben Langhinrich and as I said in my previous post there is a tradition of oral storytelling in Ireland where the bare bones of the story stay the same however the method of telling changes with each storyteller that tells it. I thought i would share one of these tales with you today, it being a Sunday ;-). What follows is a tale about marriage, the importance of having a smart wife and of not picking fights with Scottish Giants. So [read] Keywords: mac

If you have registered for ILUG and plan to come then it is possible that you will encounter at least one (me) if not more of the inhabitants of the northern 6 counties of Ireland. Not for us the soft brogue of the southern Irish which is probably more instantly recognizable as "Irish" for we use what is referred to as "Ulster-Scots". I have been fiddling around and I could'nt make head nor tail of getting a view to open all by itself without the accompanying frameset. I have tried working out the URL syntax, but i gave up after a while and did this instead, which is a kludge but it works. 01. Created a less cluttered view in the journal file called sidebar, very minimalist 02. Changed the Application Properties so that the designated frame was ViewFrame 03.
