the first day of LoLA...well, pre-LoLA. Got up and tried to run, the heat was just too oppressive, so I did a little swimming. Then off to a "inner sanctum" meeting with some of the hardcore Connections customers, where we had lunch and spent 5+ hours discussing the next wave of features, discussed feedback, pain points and more. The crowd was really interactive and it made for lively, great discussion. We had so much material, we didn't get to give it all enough justice even in this marathon meeting, but, we plan on meeting more during this week and it will give us a good direction for 2.5. |

Salute to Google’s Sponsored Links for Lotus Connections
Wed, Aug 20th 2008 11:28a Suzanne O Minassian I hadn't noticed before, so maybe you haven't yet. The other day I was Googling the focus of my work, Lotus Connections. Usually, I keep my eyes focused on the left hand side of the page, deliberately avoiding the 'Sponsored Links' - who wants to scroll through ads. But this time I was momentarily distracted and my eyes wandered to the right where I saw that companies are sponsoring links on Lotus Connections. Lotus wins over Microsoft, again and again

Wainhouse Research Report on IBM’s Approach to Social Networking
Mon, Jul 28th 2008 2:50p Suzanne O Minassian David Dines of Wainhouse Research published this fantastic report on IBM's Strategy for Taking Social Networking to the Enterprise. Wed, Jun 25th 2008 6:01p Suzanne O Minassian Today I attended a meeting of the Boston Knowledge Management Forum where the topic of the day was "Categorization and Tagging: Where's the Beef". The majority of the discussion fell into a few 'categories' of its own. Bill Ives was our first speaker and gave a great talk about the concept of emergence in enterprise 2.0. He quoted Andrew McAfee: "The dominant verb for IT in the 80s and 90s was IMPOSE. The new verb for enterprise 2.0 is EMERGE." Not surprisingly, discussion arose on bridging [read] Keywords: dogear

Facade
Fri, Apr 11th 2008 11:48a Joseph Russo Someone, I don’t know who, said we all go through life with different masks. We wear masks for different people, masks we show our workmates, masks we show our family, etc. With social software, we put up a representation of ourselves, for people to learn about us. It’s another one of those masks. What’s interesting about this though, is we are, in some way, giving up a little control of our masks. Activities in Connections 2.0
Sat, Mar 1st 2008 2:02p David A Brooks In Connections 2.0 we have taken great lengths to re-focus on enabling Activity Centric Collaboration. What does that mean? The high level goal is to organize work around the activities people do rather than the tools they use. Think how you get your work done. Lets say you receive an email about an opening in your department. You read through this email and initiate a instant message conversation with your Director. You and your co-worker each begin drafting a posting that describes the p [read] Keywords: collaboration

Lotus 911 Releases a Lotuscript API for Connections
Mon, Feb 4th 2008 1:04p Suzanne O Minassian If you were at Lotusphere, you may have heard rumblings about a Lotuscript API for Lotus Connections. Nathan Freeman and team from Lotus 911 (creators of the new BleedYellow.com site) have been busy working on this and have the API ready for play here. From that page "(The Lotuscript API) uses LS2J to broker ATOM transactions through the Apache Commons HTTP Client. Future versions will use LSX to conduct HTTP communications. Agile Development in the real world
Mon, Jan 21st 2008 11:08a Joseph Russo I want to take this opportunity of having your eyes to talk about agile development. Some of you may know intimately, the details of agile development, or have heard of it, or have no idea what in the world it is. So, those of you in the know, bear with me for a minute... Agile development is simply stated, a software development practice to go from idea, to design, to working code, to user, to user feedback and iteration on the design based on that use and feedback, in as small a cycle as possi [read] Keywords: development

Fri, Jan 18th 2008 12:59p Joseph Russo Ok, now you’ve gone ahead and created a community or you found one and joined it…how can you get the most out of that community? Let’s examine this from two perspectives. First, as a producer of information that is relevant for the community, and second, as a consumer of that community’s information. When to use a community
Mon, Jan 14th 2008 1:00p Joseph Russo What is a community? A community is a group of people. The grouping occurs because of some factor, like; 1. a common interest a. people who are interested in Chess 2. a unifying property a. people working on the Lotus Connections Project 3. a shared goal or outcome a. planning and producing a film In collaboration software, the community can take on many forms. 1. community interest groups (like google groups or yahoo groups) – these [read] Keywords: collaboration

Knowing who’s watching
Mon, Jan 7th 2008 5:00a Suzanne O Minassian In physical life, people tend to act according to their surroundings (well, we hope many do). At work, I don’t blast my music. At a movie, I don’t talk on my cell phone. It’s fairly easy to distinguish appropriate behavior in our physical world, as we have learned through social interactions which shaped us into people who act and react ‘accordingly’. Why should any of this be different online? For starters, knowing ‘where you are’ and knowing you are id [read] Keywords: community

Lotus Connections in a 3-D world
Wed, Dec 26th 2007 6:00a David A Brooks EWeek recently wrote an article on the integration of Lotus Connections into 3D-Worlds. The article talks about experimenting with the visualization of social data using three dimensions, but I am still trying to get a handle on how one would best leverage this data more effectively in this world vs the two dimensional world of a web browser. I see many possibilities if we start talking about two way communication where it isn't only visualization in the 3-D world but also leveraging interact [read] Keywords: collaboration

How alive is your social network?
Mon, Dec 24th 2007 5:00a Suzanne O Minassian “I saw on Facebook that you are in Stamford. Are you going through New Haven on your way home? I just moved here! Stop by!” I’m horrible at keeping in touch with friends. I had a new year’s resolution once to contact friends and family at regular intervals to see how they were doing, and that lasted 2 months. I’m always looking for new tools to help with this problem, though nothing really has. I started using Friendster and Tribe in 2003. I found that only a handfu [read] Keywords: facebook

Mashup Over Easy
Fri, Dec 21st 2007 5:00a Joseph Russo I wanted to do a mashup to demonstrate a few things, the power of mashups, how easy they can be, how well Lotus Connections supports mashups, and, well to have a little fun. So here we go. What are we gonna do? Since I am a designer on Communities, guess what? We’re gonna focus on communities, getting more value out of the features that Communities offers. The story of Lotus Connections
Mon, Dec 17th 2007 5:00a Suzanne O Minassian A little known fact about Lotus Connections is that it was developed from applications that have been in use inside IBM for years. When I joined in 2003, the company had been using a profile service where each employee had a page with information about their job, location, background, picture, organization, and more. It provided a place to run searches for people based on those attributes, helping me identify those who might be interested in my work, people who could help with my project, and te [read] Keywords: connections

Reaching Critical Mass

Critical Mass of Information Critical Mass of active PeopleWe could just put the software out there and see what happens, things will eventually get going. But we can do better. Just consider this analogy. You have a garden, and you want to grow some great stuff in it. So you work on the garden. Wed, Dec 12th 2007 7:00a David A Brooks Do you like seeing links like this on public sites: How about adding a "Post to Dogear" button on your intranet site. It is rather simple. As of Lotus Connections 1.0.2 we provide a javascript library that enables you to add a script include in the document head and a single javascript snippet to your site where you want the button to show: (example updated on 12/17/07 from feedback in comments) That's it, a button will now show. What?s so useful about user generated content?
Mon, Dec 10th 2007 5:00a Suzanne O Minassian There was a time when companies tried to encourage workers to share their knowledge by offering financial rewards or making knowledge sharing part of the performance review. Companies desperately wanted to collect knowledge, yet to workers the idea of sitting at an application for every project and checking off new skills learned or filling out extensive surveys was a turnoff. (I've felt the pain of those surveys, have you?) Companies were motivated to collect knowledge, but workers were not mot [read] Keywords: collaboration

Using Atom for feed syndication and publishing
Thu, Dec 6th 2007 9:19a David A Brooks In building Lotus Connections 1.x we made a conscious decision to support Atom as our web syndication format. Atom is an XML document format describing a feed which contains a collection of entries based on the specified request parameters. In addition to Atom Syndication, the Atom publishing protocol is also supported by Lotus Connections, enabling two way communication using a single document format. Atom enabled us to meet our goal of consolidating on a single standard based format that a [read] Keywords: connections
