Building a minimal Ubuntu for Lotusphere 2009
Mon, Jan 5th 2009 4:55a Tim Clark So today I am starting on a small project that should have been finished before Christmas. I have to build a ThinkPad T60 with the least amount of Ubuntu possible for vmware player to work. Then I have to work out how to get that configuration onto a USB key with an install script so we can repair laptops as we go at Lotusphere.
I hope this will not take all week, but I will keep you posted as to progress and what I find out.
P.S. only 13 days left. ;o) [read] Keywords: lotusphere

16 days and counting until Lotusphere starts
Fri, Jan 2nd 2009 5:55a Tim Clark So there are only 16 days left until Lotusphere starts and my team has lots still to do. We have to finalise the OS build for the laptops, finish off the testing of the lab instructions and get all the laptop imaged and sent to Florida. I know we’ll make it, we always do, but it doesn’t stop me worrying about it all. Oh well here’s to the 16 sleepless night between now and 18-Jan.
Happy New Year everyone. ;o) [read] Keywords: lotusphere

What a morning
Wed, Dec 24th 2008 6:53a Tim Clark I got up early to get to the supermarket before it got manic with everyone getting a years worth of shopping before the stores close for one day. I ask you, how stupid are we?
Anyway in my rush to get out the door I left the door key inside. Oops. No worries, one of our neighbours has a spare, so I’ll just go and get it. He’s not up yet and I know he’s going out later on. Damm.
I’ll risk it, go to the supermarket and get the bits I want and then come home and see if he& [read] Keywords: |

Fri, Nov 28th 2008 3:52a Tim Clark So the first UK run of the class has finished and I am very grateful to all the folks who turned up to take the class. It can’t have been that bad, as they all turned up for all three days. That’s always a good sign. ;o)
We have some improvements to make but I’m sure with a little effort we can make this workshop awesome.

Can no service be good service?
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 5:51a Tim Clark Yesterday I was looking round a new cinema/restaurant complex with Mrs C and we had been to the cinema and wanted something to eat. Looking at the menus we decided on the Mexican restaurant, but could not get in. Not because they were full or closed, but because there was no-one available to take welcome us of find out if we wanted a table. We stood there at the entrance to the place for 5 minutes, before I gave and said we’d head across to Nandos.
This is not the point of the blog, and Ch [read] Keywords: |

New Laptops
Wed, Nov 12th 2008 10:51a Tim Clark So I am blessed with more new technology that I can shake a stick at right now.
Whilst in Hong Kong I bought an Asus Eee PC 1000H with 2Gb RAM and 160GB HDD. I love this little laptop as it’s sooooooo protable and great for traveling. The power supply is also tiny, the battery lasts for about 6 hours, which is almost a whole day. The wireless and bluetooth work really well and the SD-card reader in the side is a really useful bonus. The 10″ wide-screen lcd is really crisp and bright [read] Keywords: laptop

Almost finished in HK
Tue, Nov 4th 2008 6:52a Tim Clark Our time in Hong Kong with our friends Emiko & Arnaud is almost over. We have had a great time here and I have really enjoyed finding out about another culture and finding out more about another part of the world. Traveling is so interesting when you have time to discover your new surroundings, and they are not just a hotel and an office like most business trips.
Highlights would have to be Ngong Ping and the big Buddha, visiting the Peek yesterday and the Hong Kong skyline at night. I think [read] Keywords: office

Hong Kong is cool
Sun, Nov 2nd 2008 1:52a Tim Clark Went into Central yeserday with Emiko, Arnaud and Marissa. We went shopping for some kitchen stuff for Emi and Arnaud and their new appartment. We went to Wan Chai and after we had bought an oven, hob and extractor hood, we headed up the road to the flooring shop. Once we had aquired all the needed bits and bobs Arnaud and I headed back to Wan Chai to go find some geek porn.

Camberley 3rd XV vs Guildford 3rd XV
Tue, Oct 14th 2008 11:49a Tim Clark So Saturday was a warm and sunny affair, again. Guildford looked like a talented, young and fit side and were warming up nearly an hour before kickoff. I can’t help but think that our relaxed attitude to Saturdays game helped us as we warmed up for about 25-30 minutes.
The game started well for us as we kicked off, Mr Morgan (8) tackled the catcher and it was a devastating tackle that no-one on the pitch or the side lines could ignore. That set the tone for the game and we won lots of line [read] Keywords: |

Notes 8.5
Wed, Oct 8th 2008 11:45a Tim Clark So there are a bunch of things happening right now with Notes and Domino 8.5.
We have committed to a 2008 H2 release for this and we are now in Q4 of 2008. So as you might guess we are getting close to where we want to be with 8.5. If you were at the UKLUG sessions you may have heard Ed Brill talk of a target date for release. I’m glad to see that everyone has stayed true to the promise they made Ed and have not blogged it.

Battersea Ironside 3rd XV vs Camberley 3rd XV
Sun, Oct 5th 2008 5:13a Tim Clark An overcast and chilly lunch time greeted us as we left Camberley to get to BI’s clubhouse. 1 hour and 45 minutes later we arrived a little tired from the drive. That did not dampen our drive to put the first win on the sheets for the season.
Having been given a generous four minutes to warm-up we them got right into the game.
The first half could have been a familiar start for us with BI making a break through out bank line and heading for the corner. Joffer did a great job of tackling th [read] Keywords: |

Trade shows = business cards
Thu, Oct 2nd 2008 4:13a Tim Clark Why is it I always end up with a stack of business cards from a trade show or partner facing event. Maybe I’m just lucky. Maybe I have this strange magnetic effect on the card that they are printed on. Maybe people want me to contact them after the show as I must have promised them something.
But the question still remains, “what on earth do you do with them?”.

Mentoring
Thu, Oct 2nd 2008 3:46a Tim Clark Yesterday was a learning day for me, all about “Mentoring in IBM”. Now I was thinking that it was going to be a day being told all about the blue tape that IBM wrap you up to stop you doing anything productive with your time. But instead I was given some very useful ‘go out there and try it’ techniques that both I and the people I mentor will benefit from.
The main part of the advice centres around four main topics.

VMware image compression.
Fri, Sep 26th 2008 8:36a Tim Clark WOW, what a task this morning. To get as small as I can a VMware image of Microsoft XP so that people can download it without too much trouble.
I started by downloading the image from the USA ftp server. 7.67Gb in 1Gb .rar files.
I then expanded this out and it was a total of 13.6Gb when totally expanded. I then ran the tools recommended here. (I had to dig around for the vOptimizer, but found it on cNet’s website)
I managed to get the uncompressed VMware image down to 3.71Gb, which I w [read] Keywords: microsoft
