You’ve heard it said before, what you put on the web, stays forever!  But how many people really heed this sort of advice?  I have been trolling through the internet in my research for the top 10 things that you NEVER want to do with Social Media.  I bet you’re already doing some of these things. 1. Insider tip: It’s not social if your the’re not talking about you
Sat, Apr 28th 2012 10:24p   Vaughan Rivett
Let’s not forget, by nature people are social.  Generally speaking, this is part of the human DNA.  In turn this means that people are sharing.  They like to share what they’ve been doing, their opinions and their thoughts.  Not only that but they also like to be heard. Have you ever stopped to think about what people are saying about your brand?  Now, I know a number of you will be thinking about the results of your last customer survey.  You know the one I mean, the one wher [read] Keywords: apple blogging facebook google iphone twitter

It’s one thing to have customers, and loyal customers, at that.  But, what does it take to turn a customer into a “Brand Advocate”.  This type of person is someone who will tell others about your brand with passion.  In fact, they will most likely tell the world through the use of Social Media.  There are three key components that need to be considered to transform customers into Brand Advocates: Company Culture Engagement Exceptional Experience Company culture is the for [read] Keywords: facebook google twitter

I really don’t think you understand who I am – I am Social
Thu, Apr 19th 2012 2:44p   Vaughan Rivett
The other day I went to the supermarket to pick up a few food items (how many blog posts have I written lately which involve food?). I found a product which I liked the look of and saw that it had been reduced from $8.00 to about $5.00.  As a result I decided to take two while taking advantage of the offer. I went to the counter to pay for the goods expecting a total of $10.00.  However, the cashier said that it came to $16.00.  I questioned this and pointed out that there was a “Red-la [read] Keywords: facebook twitter

Have you ever heard how to cook a “Social” egg?  Now I know that this has got you thinking, sounds a bit crazy maybe?  Lately, I have been a home, by myself, with my wife and kids overseas (except for one).  During this time I’ve had to cook my own meals.  Past history would suggest that I should not be in the kitchen, in-fact, my wife usually sends me out to the BBQ to cook. Protecting your brand on social networks – the Chris Cairns embarrassment

I have, along with many other social media evangelists, watched with interest as Chris Cairns, a famous New Zealand cricketer, went to court to defend himself against allegations of match fixing.  These allegations came about because of a message which was sent, as a tweet, which then became viral.  Chris Cairns took Lalit Modi (ex-chairman of the Indian Premier League) to court and won a settlement worth around NZD$200,000, possibly more. Mon, Jan 30th 2012 11:03a   Vaughan Rivett
I don’t want to sound pessimistic, but the truth of the matter i,s that your all important brand is not as good as you think, nor is it important.  Today, it is risky business to sit behind an office desk, reviewing great ratings in customer satisfaction, but while your brand is at its best, it could all be destroyed within minutes.  It only takes one person to have a bad experience and it could be all over. I am always interested in talking to people who have made up their mind to migrate from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange. It would appear that the cost of such a change is never fully considered or understood until well into the project. Below is a simple diagram which shows that most migrations mean more servers. This is only an example of part of the cost.  For instance, more servers also require more support services etc.  Despite all that Microsoft may say to sell their software, even if [read] Keywords: domino lotus lotusnotes notes exchange exchange facebook microsoft server twitter

Using a #free office productivity suite (documents, spreadsheets, presentations) with files stored in the cloud

Over the years you have probably gotten use to having to pay high prices for software such as office productivity tools.  I use to use an application called Microsoft Office which allowed me to do my word processing, spreadsheets and also presentations.  Recently, I installed IBM Lotus Symphony which is a free alternative. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Lotus Domino Server and Lotus Notes is still RAD!
Tue, Sep 13th 2011 4:29a   Vaughan Rivett
Hardly a day goes past where I don’t have a conversation in which someone is comparing Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange.  The thing that I can never get over, is that the two are completely different.  Microsoft Exchange does email and does it really well.  Lotus Notes does email and again does it really well, but, Lotus Notes is an application development platform. So what do I mean by “RAD”.  It’s an acronym for Rapid Application Development.  Basically, what it m [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes application applications development email exchange exchange facebook microsoft server twitter

I have worked with a lot of different organisations over the years, I’ve always found it really interesting how easy it is to pick up on the culture of the company within minutes.  It only takes a few comments from one or two staff to gain some significant insight. 3/4 of Australian websites are not optimized for smartphones

A news article on a New Zealand website claims that 3/4 of Australian websites are not optimized for smartphones.  I shudder to think what this may be like for New Zealand websites.  Recently, I have seen comment that some ISP’s are reporting that mobile data usage is now exceeding that of other connection types. It is now important that websites are developed to cater for mobile devices, while still providing traditional users with the full features which they would expect on a full b [read] Keywords: domino lotus development facebook mobile security server twitter

I predict a new question in just 2 years time – What shall I buy, a phone or a PC?

I think that this is quite a safe prediction, what shall I buy, a phone or a PC?  In just another two years this will be the question which will be running through the mind of consumers, but probably not businesses. Today, I have a smartphone which is able to do almost all that I need and as a result, I could almost live without a PC.  With the age of internet applications, there is little need for much more than a web browser.  I see businesses in a rush to retire desktop applications, in fa [read] Keywords: applications desktop facebook mobile twitter

AUSLUG finished a few days ago now. While I had every intention of keeping my blog updated with some of my views on the event, life has been busy.
