My Top 10 Long-Waiting Lotus Notes Improvements
Wed, Dec 16th 2009 6:58a   Vincent Yeung
There are lots of things I like about Notes.  But yet, there are also lots of thing I hope IBM will improve in Notes as well.  As we are close to Christmas time, I have put down my top 10 Notes improvement.  I hope I don’t have to wait till Notes 12+ to see these changes.  And if God permits, may all these features I list below appear in Notes 9 (or even 8.5.3??!).  (1) New Notes Workspace / Database Icon (24-bit colors) – Everyone ask for, yet, still not there. To the Notes Geeks out there: A blog from "assonos blog" shows us how to run Notes 8.0.x and the previous version concurrently. However, I have yet find anyone that show a possible way to run Notes 8.0.x and 8.5.x concurrently. I have searched for a while and found no where to go. Why am I still using Outlook at home?
Fri, Nov 27th 2009 7:38a   Vincent Yeung
As a Notes Developer, I know what Notes is good at and what it is not. I use it at work. I develop applications on it to solve my clients' problem. We use the embedded Sametime to communicate (and love it). We use it for lots of workflow and office automation tasks. The list can goes on and on, depends on how you use it. But why am I still use Outlook at home? Why can't I use Notes like I am at work? First Week Using Symphony...
Mon, Nov 23rd 2009 2:13p   Vincent Yeung
In my previous blog, I downloaded Symphony 1.3 and see if it can heal my MOA (Microsoft-Office-Addiction). Mainly I use the document and spreadsheet tool. I found couple things that worth to talk about: 1) Type-ahead in word processing? While writing an email to a client, the writing tool provide a type-ahead function in the document. If you type fast enough it probably won’t brother you that much. Anyone use Notes and Documentum in the office?
Fri, Nov 20th 2009 7:50p   Vincent Yeung
I am very interested to hear form those who use Notes and Documentum in their companies. Based on an in-depth research (a.k.a Google Search), I found that there are a lot of sites talk about integration between Outlook / Sharepoint and Documentum. And some companies use Documentum to migrate from Notes. I also found some talk about Quickr with Documentum. But I don’t seem to find much about Notes integrate with Documentum. Sun, Nov 15th 2009 10:07p   Vincent Yeung
Way back when, the first Windows word processor I used was Lotus Ami Pro.  I remember very clear that I like that software.  It got the job done, quick and easy.  I still remember I was hesitated to switch MS Word.  However, like a lot of us Microsoft Word becomes my default word processor for the last 15 years. Today I just download Lotus Symphony 1.3 and want to give it a try.  I did try the older version of Symphony but didn’t like it.  Let see if this version [read] Keywords: ibm lotus notes symphony blogger microsoft office

Blackberry User’s Pain – Dealing with Calendar
Wed, Nov 11th 2009 9:47p   Vincent Yeung
One issue I hope we can improve during the Notes 8 Upgrade Project is the Calendar synchronization between the BES server and Domino server. We got a lot of users complaint about how Domino “is screwing up“ the calendar in the blackberry. However, after getting a bit more information about the issue, I realized this is a known problem in Domino (my administrator told me it happens in Exchange as well). My manager is one of the good examples. He got a lot of meetings, I mean, a LOT of meeting [read] Keywords: domino notes bes blackberry blogger exchange exchange laptop server

So far, Windows 7 did not make me cry…
Tue, Nov 10th 2009 10:17p   Vincent Yeung
My confession: I do not hate Vista. In fact, I never go back to Windows XP ever since I use Vista. I was nervous about wiping my working Vista machine and upgrade Windows 7. I have spent at least 3 hours to backup the whole machines and almost kneed down and prayed to God before I start the upgrade. Well, here I am, using the Windows 7 Live Writer (the blogging tool) to write this blog. I have to say, except one minor issue, Windows 7 did not make me cry (yet). It did not surprise me either. I have not been blogging about my journey in Notes since May 2007.  It is not because I have left the Notes platform.  Rather, I am too busy of participating in the Notes 8 upgrade project in my company.  Well, putting the excuses aside, I am back to the blogging world. By the end of Nov, my whole company will be completely upgraded to 8.0.2.   I was quite disappointed that we are not able to upgrade to 8.5 because of the time limitation.  However, knowing the perfo [read] Keywords: lotus notes xpages blogger blogging server

Notes 8 Public Beta 2 - Start to get better after a clean installation!!

After crashing my Notes 8 Beta 2 client many times, I decided to rip the whole thing out and re-install it. And guess what, it did the magic. Now everything seems to be more stabilize. At least I can click the "Day At-a-Glance" sidebar without crashing. After playing around the mail & calendar for almost 2 hours, I start to appreciate the interface more. The mail is cleaner and look professional. Calendar is so far my favorite. It is very easy to look at and use. Notes 8 Public Beta 2 - Still a long way to go?
Thu, Mar 15th 2007 8:28p   Vincent Yeung
After I passed my Notes 7 Recertification Exam, I immediately went home and re-installed Notes 8 Public Beta 8. The reason I re-installed the beta is because I needed to keep my Notes 7 for my exam preparation for a while and I just can't wait to see Notes 8 beta. So I installed Notes 8 beta while kept my version 7. Well, here I am, upgraded the Domino server and replace my Notes clients 7 with the beta. My Next Major Topic – User Interface Comparison: Lotus Notes 8 (beta) vs. Outlook 2007
Thu, Mar 8th 2007 3:55p   Vincent Yeung
I have been waiting to blog this for the longest time. Ever since I saw the Outlook 2007 beta, I thought, once again, Lotus Notes looks like a ugly cousin (sorry for those Lotus fan boys, including myself). Outlook 2007, in my opinion, is one good looking application. I was impressed how Microsoft care about the user interface. But after I went to Lotusphere 2007, I can’t help but say that there is a lot of similarities for these 2 new products. The Importance of Training
Tue, Mar 6th 2007 10:56a   Vincent Yeung
If every computer user has time and willing to open the HELP file, there is no need for any kind of training. No matter how great and intuitive you design the application, the program itself does not improve the user experience or productivity unless the users know how to use it. Our company used Lotus Notes as the email platform since version 4. As far as I remember, we never offer any official training to our users. Another update about the Notes 8 Public Beta in here. I believe we are closed to the public beta... 5 days before the end of this month!! As of so many new features that are going to be seen, the one I really want to test is the "Activity" function. The Power of Blog
Mon, Feb 19th 2007 7:08p   Vincent Yeung
I start to taste the power of blogging. Two and a half months ago, I started this blog simply to put down my experiences in Lotusphere 2007. Even though a hit counter is setup, I don't really concern the number of hits. After all, this is not a paid website or IBM-sponsored blog (I don't think I'll ever get a laptop from Microsoft either!!). Lotus Notes 8 - Memory Requirements

I got an opportunity to chat with a system administrator who went to Lotusphere 2007. What really surprised me is that the minimum memory requirement for Lotus Notes 8 (the one that build on Eclipse Platform) is 512 MB. If the user also use other programs such as MS Office, Sametime, etc, 1GB Ram is recommended. Please keep in mind that this information is not from Lotus directly. After 5 days of Lotusphere, I am ready to get back to work. This trip is a fruitful trip as I got more than what I expect.
