Three posters in a Sonos office in Santa Barbara

The fine print is way too small, but I will spell it out for you. What is significant about these posters? There are the three princicples that guide Sonos. Or at least they did in 2015. And they are the reason why I am not just walking away. Sonos will be able to fix this.

  • The Experience Comes First. "Right" is hard to define but we are willing to struggle until we find it. And struggle even more to make it ruthlessly simple. With maniacal quality, every detail highly considered, and sound quality nothing short of what the artist intended, our standard is Ultimate. Do it right, or don't do it.
  • Be Relentlessly Progressive. Connecting music and music lovers means everything we do lives at the intersection of art, technology and culture. And that is an intersection where invention isn't enough, our choices need to be inspired. Top what you did yesterday - for music lovers, and for the world we live in. Every little bit counts.
  • Remember the Golden Rule. Treat everyone as you want to be treated. And remember that transparency and respect are oxygen for great collaboration. When we do the right thing, and trust each other to nail our parts, good things happen.

I think Sonos is doing well on the Experience Comes First principle. Their products hide the complexity. Setup means just pressing a button, sometimes even that becomes obsolete. On the Relentlessly Progressive principle I can see success and failure. Sonos is slow, even if they have the right vision. Do it right, or don't do it. For many things in development I wish they had come much earlier.

The Golden Rule is the tricky one. This works extremely well in a small company, but cracks open as you grow and bring in more people with different backgrounds. They have different ideas about doing the right thing, and sometimes it's the wrong thing. I am close enough to see the cracks. I have seen good people leave after somebody fired their staff without asking them. I see bullying and hurt. And yet, I believe that if you take the Relentlessly Progressive principle and apply it to the organization and not the product, things can improve. You can't let one bad decision guide your future.

Culture is the precious thing to preserve as a company grows. It is well worth the effort.

Apple Watch Series 3 GPS + LTE
Thu, Sep 21st 2017 5:38a   Volker Weber

Wed, Sep 20th 2017 1:10p   Volker Weber

After the iOS 11 Upgrade :: Choose your file formats

iOS 11 uses new container formats for photos and videos. For the time being I prefer the old more ubiquitous formats, although they are larger. Set in Settngs/Camera/Formats.

Samsung finally starts addressing their Clippy-problem
Mon, Sep 18th 2017 12:48p   Volker Weber
Bixby is Samsung's Clippy. An annoying assistant nobody really wants, besides Samsung of course. If you bought a recent Galaxy S8 or Note 8, it comes with an extra button that summons Bixby. It was the single most annoying feature when I tested the Galaxy S8. You can finally disable the single press on this button. Holding the button will still open Bixby Voice. Imagine you could use this button for something useful.

Can you see where this is going?
Sat, Sep 16th 2017 8:31p   Volker Weber
I used to say that before you marry a girl, throw her in the pool. Only if she comes out laughing trying to throw you in, you found the right one. I no longer say that, because everybody is carrying a smart phone, all of the time. Chances are, you are going to not only ruin a perfectly good phone. Do you think this will go on forever? I find myself leaving the phone behind more often. But when I do that, I am completely off the grid. The Apple Watch has given me an opportunity to catch import

And what about the iPhone 8 Plus?
Sat, Sep 16th 2017 7:40p   Volker Weber
I am an iPhone Plus user. I like the large display and the dual camera. I can tolerate the huge size, since it also has a larger battery than the smaller model. I find the regular iPhone easier to handle, but it has neither of these features. If you have an iPhone 6S Plus or a 7 Plus, there is no immediate need to upgrade to an 8 Plus, but there are some interesting differences to look at. The size is almost identical, the buttons are in the same place, the existing cases should work. Almost

Second monthly update for Moto Z2 Play
Sat, Sep 16th 2017 7:12a   Volker Weber
I am seeing a pattern. OK, its August update in September, and July update in August, but Moto is on a monthly and not a quarterly update cycle. Much better than Huawei for instance.
